 Can anyone please assist me in telling me what to do if my local Discs (:C;D)through the My Computer Path on My HP530 Laptop prompts me to choose with which program I want to open them? I am tired of having to start -----> explore every time I need to access my documents...

Check the root of the drives for a autorun.inf file. If it exists, delete it. That has been the most common cause for me in the past

Yeah its a little self-replicating bug thats usually spread with flash drives

It's not just autorun.inf... There will be corresponding executables that the autorun.inf is trying to "autorun" :o

Please explain in detail I am not familiar with autorun.inf??? Thanks

I had that exact problem, just the other day but mine was caused by a virus you can open those drives by going to run and typing e.g. c: if you need to do something urgent but to actualy fix the problem i used a little app called Combofix, its small and basic but gets the job done!

p.s when its running dont click on dos prompt screen, let me know if this helps

I also had the same at a friend. a virus. You can't delete or edit and save the autorun.inf
file and I was unable to turn on "show hidden files and folders". Will try this combofix util.

jip i also could not change the hidden files property unless i edited it in the registry(it would just revert back to the original setting e.g. Do not show hidden file and folders) but combofix sorted that out too

Hi.

Forgot that not everyones AV will get rid of the virus itself first. Our AV gets rid of the virus, but because of our group policy settings, can't actually delete the autorun.inf file. (The AV doesn't run the delete process as a SYSTEM user, but rather as a normal user). So getting rid of said inf file sorts it out for us. Even leaving the executables behind is not a problem, as long as you not silly enough to manually run them. But yeah. Different payloads for a similar virus everytime. The whole registry editing thing is painful sometimes. The latest one I had to contend with didn't allow registry editing at all. Even when using Bart-PE. Weird one. Really messed up the system.
