Local Elections 2011- Combo Thread

I received an SMS from the local DA urging me to vote for their councillor. They have my phone number and polling station. Do the parties get access to the voters' roll? And how the hell did they find my cell number?

And it's the first time I vote at this station. At my old station the DA also had my details even the changed cell number.

Yes, I am also not comfortable with them having my phone number. Not the DA in specific, but the fact that they were able to get it without me giving consent.

It is so easy - the cell companies know what numbers are near what cell towers and there is a better than even chance that if your number spends the night near a cell tower that you live in the area.

Or you have an iPhone and it told the DA where you have been all by itself. ;)

They have your ID number & res address too. That's too much info without asking.

If that were the case I'd get SMS from all the voting stations around work.

There is a book Numberology (I think) that will explain it all. Not how the DA does it, but how the Obama electoral campaigners did it.

You, as do most normal folk, leave a trail of information every day. Pick up enough pieces and stitch them together and you paint a good profile.

Or they probably bought a database from one of the cell companies' agents.

But try this - send them a request under PAIA asking where they got the info from and for what purpose they are holding it.
