Hi

I've recently applied for a hosted exchange account (1and1.com) for about $7 a month.
The service is very nice, but a bit slow for SA use, since the mailbox is overseas. Does anybody know of any (cheap) personal hosted exchange services in SA that are worthwhile?

For the uninitiated: Hosted exchange is similar to Blackberry in a way.

My previous solution had me forwarding my Gmail to a local iburst POP account, but I moved this setup to an Exchange account for the sync capabilities..

The main driver for using this service is keeping all the PC's, laptops and mobile phones I have in sync.

IS offer one but it wasn't cheap, 3k setup fee to start with IIRC then about R150 a month per user with extra charges if you go over a GB storage etc. too.

Have you considered using gmails free imap or are you syncing other things too?

I have a bit of experience in this area, your problem does not lie with the overseas company in actual fact it is probably likely that it lies with your own speed of connection or your current ISP throttling the supply, I use 1and1.co.uk and their servers like the 1and1.com are hosted all over the place the speed is entirely dependant on the ISP I am with or if I am using my cellular provider as opposed to my ADSL, also the speed of the push email provided by exchange can also be varied by the size of the email, again due to your current ISP. You could try godaddy.com or as the previous comment said it will cost you a lot for being impatient. If this was me I would change ISP's. By increasing churn and making your voice heard as a client you can make a difference - maybe its time to remind your ISP who is actually in charge and it sure is not them. I would love to start my own ISP with a difference, get venture capital to bury my own 100gb cables and build a cable network in RSA for the very first time.

What annoys me is that RSA has the technical capability to use the full speed available from the optical cabling that has by and large (in the big cities at least) replaced copper and has the ability to surpassed anything the world has to offer as the old copper cables were replaced by optics about 1993.

This makes it technically feasible to have 100gb data for public use and for supply of television signals but as usual South African companies suffer from that most African of malaises - fear and greed.

Fear that if they do not get as much as possible today might not be there tomorrow.

Or as the old saying goes rather sell 100 cookies today for a buck than wait till tomorrow to sell one for a hundred bucks. I would rather take a small loss than keep hold of stuff I do not want and is costing me money to keep.

Start your own revolution today, get a friend and grow your own ISP a great example of this (kind of ) is Fon who have FONero's people who share thier ADSL connection to make a virtual wISP either for free to those who do the same.

http://www.fon.com

There is nothing stopping you from setting up something similar with your mates or indeed setting up an open source club to raise money for a new data pipe that is faster than anything the world has ever seen before imagine 1gb home ADSL? WOWEEEE now that would be something South Africa could be proud of and free of govt control!! the Ultimate in FREE enterprise and profit.

As others have said your ISP's most likely the problem. If you use ADSL it might be worth looking into an unshaped SAIX or Verizon account, would probably be cheaper than hosting locally.

Thanks lots Guys.

Yeah - the main gripe is that hosting (like bandwidth) is a bit more expensive in SA it seems than in US.

bwana: gmail imap is nice, but suffers from the same speed problem. But, if they combine Google calendar into an Exchange / MAPI solution, I'm sold.

webslave: Do the 1and1.co.uk speeds differ significantly from 1and1.com ?
In general, is there a significant boost between using .com and .co.uk?
Networks I'm on: SITA (work PC), iBurst (Laptop) and Vodacom 3G (mobile). Thus far I've found the Vodacom a bit more responsive, but it may be that the phone accesses exchange directly and not through a HTTP protocol stack.
Yip. I did some ATM backbone projects way back on SAT-3 and the cable was under-utilized back then. Donno about now, but we really need an upgrade..

dIRE: The GAM solution looks promising, but it wants a signup fee of R500 and a minimum of 10 users....

I suppose I have to be a little bit more patient to save a little money...

I use mail2web live... and have an auto foward on my normal email adress.. its totalty free 100mb storage and supports direct push

I've tried mail2web live, and it works OK if you only have a phone. However, if you want to sync to PC's as well, the free service does not work, and the paid service is $12 (I think) which is more expensive than 1and1.com
Also, they mention something about advertising support, which I do not trust as much..

Hi Guys,

How about a hosted exchange mailbox accessed via Outlook Anywhere with VOIP functionality in Outlook and OWA for like 5$-10$ per month LOCALLY!!!!!!! http://www.ysl.co.za/ oh and don't forgetting the ability to dial in to you mailbox and control it via your voice!!!!!!

The site http://www.ysl.co.za/ does not provide costing nor a way to automatically sign up...

When filling in the contact form, it gives the error:
"
Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 800401f3'

Server.CreateObject Failed

/sendenquiry.asp, line 12

800401f3
"

Maybe ask the folks at [email protected] , but I donno... If you struggle like this to start off with , its not worth it.

You would have to do a ping check or a tracert

only consumer rights protection being better in the UK

Sounds like you have a concurrency problem - you are sharing your bandwidth with too many other users, ask for a lower concurrency ratio, something like 20:1 should help keep the speeds near ADSL levels, with higher number it is no different than having dial-up as you are sharing with so many others.

Yip. I did some ATM backbone projects way back on SAT-3 and the cable was under-utilized back then. Donno about now, but we really need an upgrade..
SAT3 is maxed out (I have a cuz who worked on it and its bandwidth is pushing the limits which could also account for the problem)

Might be a cost effective solution if the concurrency is also low.
I suppose I have to be a little bit more patient to save a little money...

Or make more money by working smarter and harder?

How far does local ISP's concurrency guarantees extend? Aren't they all reliant on Saix, IS and UUnet for the overseas links?

Is it possible to use iBurst but with a different provider for the PPPoE link?

In the end, it is also a cost tradeoff: Cost of hosting locally vs. Cost of better concurrency for overseas links.

I've used the 1and1 for a while now, and while not perfect, it does the job.

As for working harder and smarter, I hear you on the smarter part, which means paying other people to save you time. It comes down to: price of your time - price of their time = profit.
So it goes both ways.

As for the working harder part: Push email is a sure sign that it has gone too far into that region...
