I host about 20 php/mysql websites, all currently through a cheap overseas provider (servage.net) . Many of these sites are for SA comapnies, and the speed of the websites is not great (due to shared hosting and foreign bandwidth etc.)

so i need to move a quiet few of these websites onto Local SA hosting.

So far i've looked at Webafrica, for about R400 per month i get 5gig local / 120 gig overseas bandwidth on their linux reseller account, and can host unlimited domains etc...
it's quiet pricey for me, so before i commit , i would really appreciate some ideas / alternatives from the forum.

thanks

How much bandwidth do you expect each site to use and how much disk space?

Hi James
On average each website uses about 1 gig bandwidth per month, and each website take up about 100-200mb,

(but this excludes content like galleries/ downlaods and video etc. which i supose i would still still serve from my overseas servage account).

1G of bandwidth per site is going to cost you, if hosted locally.
Hetzner is probably your best bet, but I'm sure you've already tried them?

it looks to me like webafrica are the least expensive by far.
Mostly due to the fact that i can host unlimited domains off one R400 account,
http://www.webafrica.co.za/solutions/hosting_reseller_linux.html
whereas everyone else only offers one domain per account.

what i don't understand is why/how local hosting bandwidth is so expensive.
surely it should be less expensive than international?

One would think so, except most providers don't distinguish between local and international bandwidth for hosting, hence they simply charge at the price that it's going to cost them for international, effectively.

Imagine someone hosting a torrent box in a datacenter with 10gigs a month for R200 bucks or something.

Ahh! the penny drops !! i was getting a bit mixed up wth adsl local/int bandwidth and hosting bandwidth.

suppose i should host "for South Africans only" websites from home using dyndns on a cheap local-only adsl account  proudly SA indeed :D

Any recommendations on quality, affordable hosting? Linux / Cpanel / Fantastico.
SA based if possible. What's the general verdict on afrihost.com? Seems soso to me.
Some good, some bad.

Does it have to be local - the prices here are crazy! The cost of about 2 months hosting here will pay for a years hosting overseas.

I've got a few hosted sites overseas and have no bandwidth problems - maybe its just with the current hosting company your with? Do your clients connecting to the site have international bandwidth problems?
