I'm looking for a local hosing company that supports PHP and the Zend Framework.
I emailed Hetzner asking them if the support it, and the answer I got back wat that If i ask the can setup Zend Optimizer for me. that's great, but I'm look for Zend Framework.

Does anyone use Hetzner + Zend Server?
otherwise I'm looking for a good local company, that allows terminal access to the server and custom Apache httpd.conf files?

A bonus would be if I can find a local VPS hosting company!

Any help would be appreciated

I'm not suprised Hetzner was confused. Are you looking for Zend Server or Zend Framework support? Any host that supports PHP5 will be fine if it's the former. If you want URL rewriting, make sure that they offer mod_rewrite as an Apache module. Hetzner offers PHP5 on their shared hosting plans - so will be fine for any Zend Framework site.

If you want "terminal", i.e. root access you'd need to go dedicated in which case you could manage your server however you wanted (and could install Zend Server).

Many hosts will give you PHP, mod_rewrite and custom php.ini's which is more than enough to get going with ZF

Not true, VPS will be fine here. You will have 100% root + system access with any half decent VPS provider.

You're right.

I was referring to Hetzner who only have shared, dedicated and managed hosting. Local VPS's are hard to come by with few reliable hosts offering them. Also, the entry level dedicated server from Hetzner is only R895 per month, making it far better value for money than most VPS's (locally and abroad).

You can get some really awesome deals in terms of vps's for under like $10 if you go for a non-za provider, including insane amounts of bandwidth an uplink/downlink rates.

Are you looking for a host that supplies the zend framework or the zend server? Because you keep on saying you're looking for one locally for zend server, but then you end it off with asking if anyone knows about a local host with zend framework...

As jy nie kan engels lekker gesels nie, jy kan maar in afrikaans ook probeer vrae, hier is baie van ons wat meer as 1 taal ken.

Zend Server already ships with Zend Framework, that's way I don't mind If I find a local host that can supply Zend Server, but I'll be happy if I can just find a reliable local host that I know I can host my site developed on the zend Framework.

[catching the spanner] The entire site is already developed using the Zend Framework, and that's what I know best [/catching the spanner]

ssteynfaardt, are you aware that the Zend Framework is just a collection of PHP files and classes? The only requirement is PHP 5. You're wasting your time looking for a host that offers Zend Server IMO. Any host that supports PHP 5 - 5.2.x will be fine. I'd recommend Hetzner.

If I may add another spanner, why local? With bandwidth prices beginning to drop (quickly), I think local will become less of an issue in the very near future.

that might be, but at the moment my application need a low latency and the benefit of having a local company is that if something goes wrong I can just pick up the phone and find out what's going on. I'll still use Amazon S3 to host my BIG files, as storage and bandwidth is much cheaper, but isn't critical to the site. The idea is that the site loads quickly that you can see all the text images etc, an when you view a video or something, then you get that from S3. That way the user doesn't have to wait for everything on the site.

Granted.

You can do that with local companies that host internationally too.

I don't see such a big difference between local and international speed for html. That is more a case of having your pages coded correctly, in my opinion.

Either way, good luck.

Many frameworks rely on certain enviroment settings and functions to be available which many shared providers don't use so like you say, the only requirement is PHP5 but for the best experience and least errors you need a server set up with 'full zend support' if you could call it that.
