This seems like a noob question I know:D

However in my quest to better understand linux and improve on Linobuntu.

I am currently trying out more linux distros than ever before. Especially ones I have never used or tried before.

Please note I am capped hence the reason, I did not google the following.

I would want to update them etc, hence my need to do it all locally.

Looking for the following distos to update.

1) Gentoo Linux (never used this before, so I presume the correct thing to say is I am looking for local portage?)

2) Mandriva is there a better local mirror than Telkoms which only has half the updates!

3)Arch Linux, anything local for this distro?

4) Fedora 10 beta, can I update it locally etc?

Code:
GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.is.co.za/linux/distributions/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.saix.co.za/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/ http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"

SYNC="rsync://ftp.is.co.za/gentoo-portage/"
The IS server is very up to date, if they do not have a package then just wait an hour or so and it will be in the tree.

There is a local tree for Arch as well, but I do not use it at all since I use a heavy customised KDE-mod version that only has overseas repositories.

@MyWorld, i agree with your sig. I've been staying away from Gentoo for a while now, though i just downloaded a copy. Gonna give it another crack, the installation is the biggest mission ever!

The install is a bit cumbersome, but after your 3rd/4th try it becomes quick. I think to do everything yourself really forces you to understand how everthing fits together which is an awesome way to learn.

I personally don't use gentoo, but I have done a few installs and need to work with gentoo every now and then. During my first few installs I learned a truck load.
