local loop unbundled ??

way too much fiction in that article

my favourite

'But analysts are not convinced that customers are paying high fees. One analyst says operators throughout the world maintain high prices for as long as the competitive and regulatory environment allows it.

Some argue that the country would not have had a 50 percent cellphone penetration if the prices were too high. There are more than 25 million cellphone users out of an estimated population of 46 million.

Analysts warn consumers not to expect any further price cuts.
"With more subscribers and economies of scale, the operators would be able to cut tariffs without dropping their own margins," one says.'

....A1 BS

Is that another of those satirical articles that accidently got filed as non-fiction?

If not I'm going to propose that journalists need to be licensed. Too many of SA's journo's seem to take too many liberties with the truth.

WTF:

"After succumbing to pressure, cellphone operators MTN and Vodacom slashed tariffs by more than 50 percent."

My phone bill was not cut in half. Who exactly is this guy and what has he been smoking? Ah, I get it - The father of LSD turns 100 today and this is a tribute...

WTF indeed.... i'm sure the its just a few small mistakes - however, i like the sound of the local loop being unbundled allready :D

Does this guy pay attention to the media seeing as he is part of it ? Someone please send him the MyADSL url! Maybe that way he can catch up....

That's a reflection of an inelastic market, not low prices. Telecommunications is a basic service that everyone 'needs'.
