Hey:D

I was wondering if there is a service in SA where you can get/buy online storage:wtf:. Would be great to be able to store data online where we could use local traffic to upload and download.

Any links?

Oh boy, don't really think this post is in the right place...sorry:whistle:

To get the best of both worlds, you need to look for a provider that has cheap pricing (overseas) but is accessible locally (Akamai CDN).

Try these guys Rackspace.com

I just googled and found them but according to their info posted there, it is hosted on Akamai CDN servers which means you will be able to access it with local bandwidth at full speed.

Please email them and report back :)

I honestly don't know if a decent provider locally has come onboard but i suspect if they haven't then nothing is stopping someone from opening up one soonish :D.

Regards,

Yuu

Do you guys think there are potential for a business like this in SA?

I checked rackspace out. Please explain the whole akami CDN server and local bandwidth thing to me please, Yuu (or anyone)

Unfortuntely they run a restrictive Akamai setup which specifically excludes any and all South African POPs. :(

Mweb Store-it
45GB space (R70)
95GB space (R140)

Store-It is exclusive to existing MWEB members with a connectivity product (Dial-up, ISDN, ADSL or 3G connectivity). MWEB members will receive the first 5 GB Store-It space for free!

So it seems you need an mweb account to get store-it

Nope,and here's why:

1) Price of storage - Price per gig for storage even in a redundancy environ is quite cheap
2) Price of bandwidth - with the advent of uncapped accounts at relatively cheap prices and even local-only accounts ( or bandwidth given away for free ) with low price-per-gig bandwidth is becoming cheap and accessible

So here you have a business that is competing with international providers that offer gigabytes and gigabytes of storage at very low prices, making the barrier to entry for a new local service wanting to become remotely profitable quite a challenge

Aww man, thanks for pointing this out. I feel like a real arse :(.

Psywulf pretty much hit it on the head but it can't be long until we see a solution turn up :). Just gotta keep the faith.

@Friedpet, basically you would have been able to access those servers using local only bandwith which they have in S.A but at international pricing per/gb. As said above, this has been restricted somewhat :(.

It looks like Mweb Store-it seems best so far except being a Mweb subscriber may not be so attractive if you already use another iSP.

Unattractive if you find it a hassle moving iSPs (or locked in a contract) but notso if you fine hopping around :D. Enjoy :p

Thank you. Luckily my current ISP contract expires end of the month :wtf:

Why would this be?
