All having difficult times with the IS Newservers, please ad your vote for an paid Newsserver.:D

How many of you would be willing to pay for an Newsserver.
How much are you willing to pay?

obviously not more expensive than INT ones...

Will be quite expensive, remember it will be effectively int bandwidth you will be using, sure they save some by caching but probably not enough too be cost effective. Remember it has too be consistent otherwise nobody will use it. This is in contrast too IS which can do it because they have their own bandwidth, it is slow etc. Thus it is free(and crappy) or really expensive. Will you pay R100/GB, because that is what it will take for a high quality "local" service. I think it will probably work out cheaper too buy int gigs and a foreign news server account.

Local Newsservers will cut the cost of international bandwith, so I dont mind paying a bit more. :)

R100/GB???

Intl gigs go for much as R70 nowadays. And then alot of users will benefit from the 1 GIG that has been downloaded?? :D

I bought myself a giganews account 2 days ago. i went for the diamond package, unlimited downloads, 10 sessions, SSL+10 more sessions. ive transfered 25gb of data sofar in the last 2 days on saix accounts (i wont say how...) paying $ 19.95 per month, thats round about R 140 per month for unlimited news server downloads. and yes, im getting 430kb/s !!!!!!!!

i vote YES, we can really do with a news server with good stuff on it

all you need is a "partner" at IS, setup website with registration, credit card transfers, and logging, and well, a few TB's of data space. how does the ISP's like Hetzner or Iafrica or IS plug their 100mbps backbone cable onto the internet ???? Cant we just take 1x PC and do it aswell. 100mbps will be enough for 25 accounts x 4mbps ??? Not all will download at 24/7, so i think 100 accounts on a 100mbps ??? HOW ???

We need to do something urgently !!

And, yes, people will pay for it, we have the money, so get it out please...

If IS just upgraded their FTP server to 8TB of data, maby, maby....the news server will have more disk space aswell :?

Is this something to come ?

Great Idea

Guys, some of us are paying HUGE amounts of money for DSL.

This means that we have got the money to pay for a good News Server.

Now, this Idea must not just die away like all the other good DSL ideas.

What are we going to do about this?

Kiepie, is there a way you can find out more?

I emailed IS earlier... Still nothing, will post here IF they reply...

LOL

Been waiting 3 days. Dont know why there is an e-mail adress if they dont reply.

Can we start a poll on this please? Who should I ask? rpm??

So can someone from ODS actually confirm they're doing this or is it just speculation???

Thats correct.

So our accounts must be diffrent from everyone else's reseller account.

Could it be that we have struck a good deal with IS.

We are working on some value adds. No specials at the moment.

1. They will include a gamming only proxy.

2. We are concluding a deal with a news server provider.

3. We will be launching a Skype Proxy service and soon include headsets.

Do you guys know how many machines you'll need to run a decent news server? we are looking at a minimum of say 25 server machines. I would like to see who is going to spend that much money

It would be a company that would release the news server site, maybe ODS.

And what about the local hosting and bandwidth? Yes they will save some from caching, but not much.

The only companies that can afford to offer news servers are those on the backbone, IS and SAIX as the amount of international bandwidth used is INSANE, not to mention the size of the servers needed to cache...

I will personally jump off a bridge is anyone brings out a half decent news server giving max speeds(im talking 4mbit here) in south africa.

The best they could do is conclude a deal with an international provider and offer a "proxy / socks / vpn" to access those servers at a very limited speed...

Bah!
