Local Ping speeds ...

James: but then doesn't the cable have to go from CT back past JHB to get to USA/UK ?

it is pronounced crunt road in english :)

try ping 165.165.160.1 and 165.165.240.1 (BRAS)

Why would traffic have to JHB to go to UK/US the base station is at Melkbosstrand in the cape, therefor all traffic from Jhb gets routed via the cape not the other way around.

I'm just saying , straight line distance ... UK & US are north of JHB not south .. so it would have made sense to rout traffic from CT to JHB and not the other way around ...

As the crow flies it would make sense, but SAT 3 curves around africa and carries on past SA. That is why traffic gets routed from jhb to cpt. I have it worse though, durban trafic get routed via jhb so my jump to internation is bigger than most plus i am inland so it goes to Dbn then to jhb then to cpt but it does not make much difference, I often have better pings than others and i don't need really high int latency. I would love it to be as low as 100 but if i can't have that then what i do have is perfect for me. the only reason i would like it low is for my gaming.

I'm in the Centurion area and ping times to ftp.saix.net are longer than to IS's JHB servers. At least it shows that Telkom's routing works properly (i.e. shortest path).

[tva@cube tva]$ ping ftp.saix.net -c 5
PING ftp.saix.net (196.25.240.137) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from ftp.saix.net (196.25.240.137): icmp_seq=1 ttl=251 time=39.3 ms
64 bytes from ftp.saix.net (196.25.240.137): icmp_seq=2 ttl=251 time=38.1 ms
64 bytes from ftp.saix.net (196.25.240.137): icmp_seq=3 ttl=251 time=38.7 ms
64 bytes from ftp.saix.net (196.25.240.137): icmp_seq=4 ttl=251 time=39.8 ms
64 bytes from ftp.saix.net (196.25.240.137): icmp_seq=5 ttl=251 time=38.4 ms

and

[tva@cube tva]$ ping is.co.za -c 5
PING is.co.za (196.4.160.2) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from apollo.is.co.za (196.4.160.2): icmp_seq=1 ttl=250 time=21.8 ms
64 bytes from apollo.is.co.za (196.4.160.2): icmp_seq=2 ttl=250 time=19.3 ms
64 bytes from apollo.is.co.za (196.4.160.2): icmp_seq=3 ttl=250 time=18.4 ms
64 bytes from apollo.is.co.za (196.4.160.2): icmp_seq=4 ttl=250 time=19.2 ms
64 bytes from apollo.is.co.za (196.4.160.2): icmp_seq=5 ttl=250 time=20.0 ms

The IS server is logically much closer to me than SAIX's ftp server (which sits in CT).
