Local PS3 launch date announced

I heard that you can program the PS3 and load other operating systems on it. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this, cause using the cell processor to render 3D animations and stuff will be awesome.

Well with a price tag of anywhere between R6000 to R8000 and almost no decent titles using the true power of this system at the moment, I think the Xbox 360 still looks like the better option to me

please. the ps3 is a brick at the moment. rather wait a year and see if anyone (left) will develop a killer app for it. get a much cheaper 360 which is readibily available, grab gears, and jump into Live, if you are not convinced by then, you will never be.

any (real) news as to when or if the Wii is launching here in sunny South Africa?

You can load some versions of Linux on it yet.

I have seen that it is going to cost over R6000 when it is released which is to rich for me but I am actually now wondering how much the games are going to be?

They are generally $80 which is $20 more than the Xbox 360 games.

The 360 games here max out at R599 so should we expect to see PS3 games at R799?

from News24: Also available on the PlayStation Network will be brainteasers such as Go! Sudoku and Go! Puzzle, and innovative games such as Blast Factor and flOw, designed exclusively for Playstation 3.

hahahaha. sudoku. oooh watch out, the next generation truly is here. ahahahahahaha.

sorry, i'll stop now.

no prices mentioned and the only place you can seems to preorder it is from take2 - its been there for like 6 months. R 6,299 - although I suspect they're going to change the price soon.

stoke: the wii always reminds me of the competition they have in the USA - hold your wee for a wii :)

how come as soon as any new electronic device comes out, someone wants to load Linux on it?

the ps 3 will be good ...

you can load any version of linux that supports risk architecture.

"has more speed than the best PC available commercially,"

I am leaning towards the X-box I can use it as a media center extension aswell...

Loading another OS on the PS3 is one thing - leveraging the full capabilities (especially due to new parallel processes) is something completely different. It'll take awhile before the true potential of the PS3's Cell's power is brought to the fore and most likely normal pc-computing would've caught up by then.

Wii is not being released here, not officially.

I can't see you rendering 3D on your PS3, it is multi core(7 cores, one dedicated to OS, one redundant core and 5 for apps and games), but it is asymmetrical not parallel like standard processors. Some one would have to develop and app that could actually use the available cores to render out your 3d stuff. Otherwise you wouldn't get much performance. Which is why making games for it takes a long time.

Comparing the PS3 to the Xbox isn't really fair as the Xbox has been around for a while now. When the PS3 has been figured out properly by the devs, it will be great.

With Ster kinekor holding the monopoly, I mean, being the only official supplier in the country we are bound to get screwed, again. Prepare to pay twice as much as the Americans. Fantastic. I can see more people paying $5 or less for the PS1 game downloads as opposed to paying Ster Kinekor ridiculous amounts for new games. Once again by over charging us Ster Kinekor will be encouraging piracy. /rant
