Local Sites, DNS and FTP

Im sorry if this is in the wrong section. I wasnt sure where to put it. Im new to these forums, which btw, ive heard alot of good things about.

I recently got myself a 30gig local cap from OpenWeb. I want to setup a private FTP server on my home pc so that i can access my files from anywhere. Ive found a couple of tutorials on google explaining how to do this, but they make use of international dns hosts like dyndns or no-ip.

Will it still work since i have a local cap?
And if not, are there any local dns hosts?

If you only have a local only account then there is no easy way that you can make use of international dynamic dns service. However there is a local DDNS service dyndns.co.za . As far as I know they use GnuDIP, so you will need to find a compatible DDNS client for your operating system.

I have a 1gig international asswel, but id like to leave the local cap on, while not at home to host the ftp server on.

Ok...You CAN make your own Server directly from your home computer, but you need to apply at No-ip.com ( or any other ).
Things you will need:

1) An FTP server ( software ) ---> http://www.zftpserver.com/
2) A Router that can create a virtual FTP server
3) Activation for a DNS via http://www.no-ip.com ( Here you create a Webpage name, go to "redirect port 80", and re-direct it to port 21 ( for your ftp server )
The reason for the redirection is because the browsers use port 80 as a standard, but you want them to access port 21 ( ftp ).
Last but not least, you must at least have some server knowlege if things go wrong...ie port forwarding on the router side, opening of port 21 in your firewall AND router ( if your router has a built in firewall ) and obviously, knowlege on the type of ftp software you are going 2 use...

@Robin Hood: Thanks for the info. I wouldnt say im an expert with PC's, but i know my way around my router and firewall etc. So forwarding the ports would not be a problem.

Just one more thing, if i got me a dns service from no-ip (which is an international site), and ive setup my ftp server software at home, with my local cap running. when i access the ftp server from another pc, and download something from it, will it work? since the cap is only local?

in other words, will the local ftp server running on the "local cap" upload the files when the other pc downloads from it, even if it goes through a "international" DNS service?

mmmm...not sure...You could just confirm with OpenWeb or try Cadavre777's advice and use dyndns.co.za....It does the same thing...Good Luck

It looks like dyndns.co.za is hosted on an international server... so it would have the same problem as the other international services.

If you don't want to remember that horrible name, register a domain (dirt cheap), the make a CNAME to the dyndns, so all you have to remeber is homepc.yoursurname.co.za - or some such.

Simply forward port 21 from your router to your PC running the FTP Server.

I looked through my email from openweb but dont see anything about DNS. Ill contact them to find out more about this. Maybe its just with their hosting packages?

I would suggest 512Kb/s, but it all ( mostly ) depends on how fast your server is and also where it is located ( how many "hops" you have to go through before you reach the destination computer...
