Dunno if this should go here or in the software section but I'll give it a shot anyway.

Mate runs an application on his Win7 laptop that has the option to send invoices to clients via but only supports open smtp (so no option for authentication & ssl as required by gmail).

I don't want to set him up to use vodamail smtp server as this would introduce another email address to his clients with a return to path he won't be checking. You also can't specify a different return to address.

So I'm thinking maybe I could setup a smtp relay server/daemon on his pc that then interacts with the gmail server providing the required authentication. This way the clients will see his normal email address as sender and return path.

1. Is this possible?
2. Any small/freeware daemons/servers (that runs at startup) with easy configuration you can recommend.
3. If he send mail offline the mails must be retained by the daemon/server and be sent automatically immediately when a connection is established.

I don't even want him to see this process or be involved with it as he's not tech savvy.

For now I have him setup to print to pdf and mail the invoices manually.

I think what you really want here is masquerade as another email addy.
ie [email protected] then just send it through your local smtp server.
gmail smtp ssl is hard to setup with most progs.
Or to be honest would be easiest to just send with your normal vodamail SMTP server to his gmail then just put a filter in with a forward rule.
Easy pezy :-)

Ponder, he can use any SMTP server to send, whether it is the little proggie that I posted, or his own ISP's open SMTP server.
Just make sure that the return address is specified as his normal Gmail address, and it will be fine.
You don't HAVE TO use Gmail's SMTP servers to send, they are just there for the convenience.

For example, if I set up [email protected] as my primary e-mail. I can enter any open SMTP server to send with.
When the client gets the e-mail he won't notice anything different unless he digs down into the header information.
But if he hits reply... it will go to my normal e-mail pop servers.

There are only a few ISPs that you might have a problem with that will give you a "relay refused" error message.
But most of them don't care what return e-mail address is specified in the sent message.

Ok thanks. Will give that a try but so far I'm not receiving any of the test mails via the ISP smtp server.
