I've been looking at online backup solutions for a while now. There are many affordable and secure international options available, but our current international bandwidth prices makes it too expensive to manage backups of a few gigs.
anyone know of a local alternative, where local bandwidth can be used instead?

IME the local ones don't work out much cheaper in the end, the charges are just higher, but haven't really looked into it properly.

I would guess that it probably costs a crap load for any local backup solution to buy a decent line that would allow them to let users upload stacks of files day and night?

Thing is that it costs more to get bandwidth for a local server than it does to get international adsl bandwidth. So in the end it will work out cheaper to just go with an international solution back up solution and pay more for your own bandwidth. ;)

Also it's not really possible for an average host to be able to offer such a service only allowing it to be accessed locally as most of them will be charged for the bandwidth total used and not local/international bandwidth. If the charging for bandwidth on servers was split then it could work...but that idea is crazy in itself. Where in the world have you ever heard of local and international being split on servers?

So for the short answer: At this moment in time it's more worth it to go with an international host.

Google "offsite backup" you should come up with something.

Take a look at this website, they offer off site backups for R95 to R195+ depending on the daily data transfer.

Thats confusing do you have unlimited space so long as you don't use more than 20 Mb a day?(Upload + Download?)

So thats a max storage space of 600 MB in blocks of 20MB... Also you probably won't be uploading everyday, its that one day when something goes bang and you need all that data back.

How much interest is in a Download package? If there is enough people interested there may be more of a market for it and more providers will open up. (Local and international.)
