Some routers are so dumbed down these days, I'm surprised that it's still necessary to lock them down. Can't even set a custom DNS on mine.

I remember when Mweb gave a free router many many many years ago and I wanted to move but the router was locked and I didn't have money for a new one. I managed to find a similar looking router with Google Lens and downloaded the firmware form some chinese or something website and installed it. Bam! Router could then be used with any ISP.

An ISP locked the admin password for a CCTV system fibre router
We wanted to change the wi-fi password, as it was being abused
They wanted R900 to call and do it
Eventually the trustees agreed to pay
A tech came and declared the router faulty
Even though the router was "on loan" he wanted R1800 for a replacement
The replacement had a different DHCP IP address range. The CCTV no longer worked
"Not my problem" he said
Had to spend a day and a half sorting this out

And that is why locked routers are a kuk idea. The IT teams of operators are not the best and being MSPs. They just there to rip customers a new one.

Do you know how many end users I've asked to log in their routers via the IP at the bottom and they are like. huuuuuuuuh???

It's mainly the wannabe IT guys that fiddle and break kak.
Your average home user has no need or want to log into their fibre router.
As such having the router locked down by the ISP makes sense to me provided they make it easy to gain access when an IT person does need to access.

For most of my clients home connections i don't have the router login; there are a few with site to site VPN's / reserved DHCP / etc but those are very specific cases in which case I prefer to put in a proper firewall anyways.

My fibre is with Herotel (Not by my choice)

I want to install a Mikrotik so I can give my tenant in the flat his own range and queue the traffic. After jumping through 10 000 hoop Herotel eventually gave me the PPPOE details, and a letter I had to sign stating if they do not have remote access I will be liable for any call outs to config issues

I paid for my router, so I want full access. That being said, the only change I ever made was the SSIDs and password

Agreed, and as @Zeus07 implied above, the ability to change DNS.

I'm not advanced wrt configuring modems / routers, but at least want the option to change these 3 things.

Currently, the Telkom LTE router/s I use allow for password + SSID changes, but not DNS.

Yes, I forgot about DNS. That's another thing.

My contribution to humanity for the day:

Vodacom Router (Huawei HG659)
Do a factory reset
Username: vbn_cpe
Password: [U$^-V8n_Cp3

Then disable remote management
