I know this is probably not the right section, but I'm sure there are a bunch of you who are also Graphics Designers.

I was asked to update a company's logo. So I did, making it a lot more modern. Although, the client has now returned with a "It's not quite what I had in mind." and he wants me to use the clipart used in his old logo, although this new logo is a Vector logo.

Have you guys also had a lot of people not like the results of your work?
First time a client has not liked what I've made. Knew it was going to happen sometime, just don't like that it happened.

Here are a few mockups as well as their original logo. Let me know what you guys and girls think.

Try stick the hand in at the end of the sig?

lol, know the feeling, used to be a designer and it gets a bit tired after the 5'th to 8'th re-design to fix this/change that (specially when they end up saying, "I liked the first one better").

That's something I didn't want to go for. It would look too cluttered for me having both the hand and the quill. Wanted to go for minimalism. Old people don't understand it. They're very fond of things that look like they've been designed in Word.....

Yep, but they are always right ya know :)

Looking at your designs, the first thought I had was that the font doesn't seem to go with the services of the business. The company works on scientific and technical documents, but the font is more casual and artsy. For the same reason I'd say the quill is a bit too colourful. From the kind of business I am assuming from their slogan, I'd say the font and design has to be serious and "strong", not pretty.

That's just my opinion, I am in no way a designer. Your client is however also not a designer, so maybe both of us are not getting it.

The only comment I have is that your new logo is a bazillion times better than the original. Just slap the client.

That logo is epic, they should get with the times if they don't like it. I like the last one with the brighter colours alot:love:

Edit: Most modern companies tend to make the whole name the logo eg custom font with the image integrated. Looks loads nicer....

@ OP, do you have a Devient art account?

They're all the same - beautiful. I'd go for (3) personally and I'd make sure that they design also looks good in plain black on white.

I'd say #3 is the best. How is it going to be transferred to single colour/letterheads etc?

To me the 3 new versions all look the same, just on different types of backgrounds (white, pink, brown paper). Am I missing something? That being said - the new logo is stunning. The old logo looks like it is from the 1980s. Your client is a moron. That new logo totally rocks. Sure, maybe you could bring in a hand outline, and they would be less resistant to change.

Don't worry - I do some part-time photography. Most of the time they are quite happy with the results but once.. I had this lady who I did some photos for as a courtesy and she hated every single one. I eventually told her that if she wanted something else, she should hire a professional. I did them for her for free, and I photographed what she provided. I couldn't make the inside of her guesthouse look like anything other than it does! The room is the room!

You want beautiful photographs of something, make sure that something is beautiful to begin with! Aaarggghh.

In your case though, I adore the new logo, even though the font is casual-ey.

between the 3 i'd go for 'Mockup_3'

I'd say #3 is the best.

All 3 Logo's are exactly the same?

1) as said, your logo is too "artsy".
2) Your logo is going to fail on photocopies, black and white media, and more importantly, on vinyl-cut work.

stop wasting time with multiple fancy-schmancy presentations trying to make your work look better, and work on the actual logo itself.
3 angles of the same logo isn't helping your customer - 3 different concepts on the other hand, is.

painful as it may be the client is the person that is going to foot the bill at the end of the day, so irrespective of how you feel about the design you need to get to understand the clients needs and wants.

just looking at the website tells me that they are a staid traditional business and probably not looking for a drastic change, bear in mind that the logo appears on the website as well so this is probably also impacting on the owners choice of logo.

also take into consideration that they focus on scientific, medical and technical types of documentation so a more technical font would be appropriate. I think your design is good but not right for this client.

and no I'm not a designer, but I have been in the clients shoes and worked with a designer on a logo for my company

Yes that too, the font at the bottom does not imply "scientific" or "technical" at all.... it's more fitting to something like a Kindergarten School logo or something.

How much do you charge for your design work btw?

Brilliant logo I would have been a happy customer. Sometimes the customers taste is a quite different from the designer. I have come across a few jobs where I completely disliked the design but that's what the customer wanted so you have to bite the bullet.

That was my first thought also, the font doesn't imply scientific. Also the colourful feather needs to be simplified somehow.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Many valid points mentioned.
I think I did perhaps go for something too stylish compared to practical and related to his field of work.
When the client and I spoke, I mentioned that the logo looks extremely outdated, and he then requested a more modern design. That's where the design came from. He is a Prof at a University, and so I assumed that he does a lot of work with students, that's why I went with a more eye catching design with a bit of colour and style.

As to the discussion about the 3 designs all looking the same. It's the same logo, presented as 3 different Mock-ups. We use this so that the clients can get a better idea of how their logo will look on different surfaces/works. We usually provide 2 different logos at the draft stage, this client however wanted to first see 1 draft before he would hire me.

For those asking how much we charge for logo designs. Prices start at R450 for a Vector Logo. Meaning you'll be able to resize your logo infinitely without losing any quality in the logo. PM me if you need more information.

Thanks again everyone for your feedback. It's really appreciated to get some extra perspective
