Does anyone know about some sort of ("new") technologoy that's based on wi-fi but would allow one to move around anywhere in the hotspot's footprint ? Is there any truth to the matter ?
My understanding is that it would be consisting something like this:
- It is not Wi-Max.
- A broadcast tower with range of up to 9km from the base.
- Broadcast hotspot would be focusing it's signal into a particular direction
- You as user would need no special equipment, your laptop's built-in Wi-Fi would be enough to send/receive anywhere in the hotspot area.
- It would be like Wi-Fi, but would allow one to move your Wi-fi connected equipment freely inside the hotspot's 9km footprint.
- It is uncapped, low latency, 8mb connection for under R1 000 delivered via fibre to this in-the-middle-of-nowhere town.
- Apparently to be offered by @lantic internet, with Ellisras (nowadayz known as Lephalale) being the first place in South Africa where this is to be rolled out.
- I Do not know what spectrum/frequency this would utilize.
I've spoken to the local @lantic guy (Erik Oosthuizen) here in Ellisras who told me that this is on it's way here. So far talk has been cheap and nothing's happened. He hasn't responded to my requests for more information.
Does anyone know of something like this on trial here in S-Africa or any other country ?
