Looking at buying a console. Is the PS3 worth it?

Hi all. My sister wants to buy a ps3 for my nephew. He really wants to play God of War 3. Ive been looking around at prices on the XBox and PS3. I see the Xbox average price is R2000 and the PS3 is R3800. This obviously is a massive price difference. Problem is as you all know God of War can only be played on PS3 unless Im wrong?

Anyways. Is it worth it to buy the PS3 over the Xbox?

That said I have been looking at Game, Dions, Makro, Incredible Connection and Hi-Fi Corp and they all roughly the same price. Is there a shop in Gauteng that sells the consoles at a better price or anyone having a special on at the moment? on either of the consoles. NOT an online shop please. Thanks all.
 
I own and xbox and i love it, and if you nephew wants GOW 3 he will have to buy a ps3
the problem i have with you comparison is you are comparing the xbox arcade to a a ps3 , the xbox arcade has no hard drive and the ps3 has a HD of more then 120GB. you need to compare the price of the xbox elite to a ps3 and then the ps3 price will be more competitive.
All the ps3 fanboys will agree ps3 is a better machine, and if i could aford one i would buy it the nice thing about both consoles is they have mulitple uses as well, (video streaming, divx playback, online gaming, dvd and blu ray (ps3 plays blu ray) so you are geting extra features

as for pricing look around specials do pop every now and again (Pick and pay hyper had one for R2200 but that was probaly a printing error) a good option of you have and edgars acount is buying from cna and paying over 6 months interst free.

Oh and GOW3 has a age restriction of 18 i think so hope you sister is cool with that :)
 
I got my PS3 this week and so far very happy with it. I guess you have to determine what you want to do with it. My main thing was to play Blu-ray movies since at the moment it is still rated as one of the bestest blu-ray players around, but also media streaming to replace my HTPC. Lastly games, but I still prefer to play most games on my PC.

One major thing to consider wrt games is that you'll have to pick the console that plays the games you want to play. There are several games that are locked to only the xbox or PS. Also in the last few days while shopping around for PS3 games to try out I noticed that there are much fewer PS3 games on the shelves than Xbox games. However, I think that is due to Sterkinekor who is such a crap local distributor (all local playstation consoles and games are distributed by sterkinekor and I have heard many bad stories about them). BUT, you can buy almost any game online these days rather than at a shop so that way this is not so much of an issue.

Also consider the upcoming new user interfaces for the consoles. Project Natal vs the Playstation Move - again personal choice.

All in all I don't think you can go wrong with either one of the two...
 
I had both for a spell, but since only own the PS3 and love it. I think at the time there was more option with the Xbox and Live...great online games and content etc (this was in the UK mind)....but do love PS3 games, quality and as Knersus says it comes with BluRay so you're sorted in the department :)
 
I would take a ps3 anyday!

Games are awesome.
I love the fact that I surf the net via my ps3 and my wireless desktop.
Also its a blu ray player.......
 
GoW3 does have an age restriction of 18 and there is a pretty explicit scene which would make your sister blush if she saw it so thats not a great game to get the nepher unless his 18.

I have a PS3 and the only major difference between that and the Xbox is the Blu-ray player, oh and that Sony will be updating the PS3 firmware in June/July, so that it can handle 3D Blu-ray. Thats only applicable if u have a 3D capable HDTV.
Best bang for Buck = XBOX. But Superior Gaming Tech = PS3.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the 3D blu-ray upgrade. That was another reason why I chose the PS3 as a blu-ray player because when you buy a normal BR player it stays the same for it's full life time - even with little firmware updates they will not add features to it - but with the PS3 they do actually add features to it.
 
My first foray into console gaming started 6 months ago. I did my research online (lots of reading, listening to comments of fanbois from both sides, Wikipedia, Console Specs, etc), and eventually decided to go with the PS3. I bought the PS3 Slim with 250GB HD. I am very happy with my purchase. There are advantages and disadvantages to both consoles, but for me, the PS3 out-did the XBox on a signifcant number of features, from WiFi, to Wireless Controllers with internal rechargeable batteries, to Blu-Ray movie playback, to the PlayStation Network where you can buy and download old games, new games, and other downloadable content, to reliability (XBox's are known for having poor hardware design, while PS (1, 2, 3) are known for their excellent quality), to bluetooth, to USB ports (XBox uses some proprietary crap I believe), to having the ability to change the HD, etc...

You need to do more reading online. Search Google for PS3 vs XBox 360. Search these forums as well - there's lots of them here and at www.mygaming.co.za.

PS3 is much better than the 360, but then again it's a LOT more expensive

It's worth it though

The Xbox 360 Arcade for R1999 comes with free HALO: ODST and Forza 3 worth R1200. Also with the latest update allows usb flash drives can be used for memory card purposes. This makes it easier to carry your gamer profile over to your buddy's house for some co-op. The XBox controller is far superior and older games are very cheap compared to the PS3.
 
well the R1800 difference you get a Blu Ray player, Free online play, built in wireless,
a normal bluray player is very expensive and with these the firmware updates actually add features like the whole 3d bluray thing!
 
PS3's is worth it imo. as people have said you can watch movies on there, listen to music its a blu ray player, you can surf the internet its cool. The games and exclusives on the PS3 are very cool to play you're nephew will love em.
@ soldierboi rergards to your firsy point, he could've played GOW 1 and 2 so things should be fine

how is the controller far superior??
even if it is slightly better, why would he want the usb feature when the ps3 has like a 150GB hard drive? or even 250GB depending on his model!

As someone who owns both consoles I find the Xbox controller to be WAY better than the PS3 controller. But then My first consoles were the Xbox360 and then the PS3, I never owned a PSONE or PS2 so I never got used to the Sony controller like most people.

But I really dislike the PS controller, to the point where I'm trying to get the Logitech version.
 
ps controller is crap. I also have both consoles. Xbox is superior in gaming. Ps good for watching movies. Blueray movies are 300+
 
i have ps3, xbox360, wii, ps2

the ps3 is the better overall console
as everyone has said the xbox360 controller is better
but overall the PS3 has way more features
and as I got mine from the PNP special last month, it was a bargain as well

haven't played God of war yet, but uncharted 2 for Ps3 is brilliant, one of the best games you will ever play and worth getting the PS3 just for that, and same goes for Xbox360 gears of war 1 and 2, awesome games.
 
Strange, I haven't used and XBOX 360 much, but the few times that I did, the controller actually irritated me - The shape just didn't feel right... maybe because I played PS2 years ago?
 
There was a time when I thought the PS2 controller was absolutely great. Then I used the Xbox 360 controller. There is really only one thing wrong with the 360 controller, the D-pad. Otherwise it completely beats the Sony controller.
