Basically I would like a camera that has reasonable low light, macro, preferably 4k and a mic input.

So I have been hunting for a bridge camera at first thinking I may get away with a cheapie but unless I go no name brand, no chance.

Found a Nikon D500 on takealot for R3200, but 1080p only and no manual control and no mic input, Canon SX420, about the same.

Thought ok, guess I'll get an entry level dslr, no 4k, no mic, pretty much as useful as the above.

Eventually I found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ80 4K at R8k.

Fits all the bills right? No freaking mic input.

will be mainly using it for family and for filming/photographing insects.

Anyway, if you got this far, do you have a suggestion for me on what bridge or entry level device to buy?

I'm pretty sure they exclude the mic input from cheaper cameras to force pros to only go pro (end of tinfoil hat moment   ).

Get a mirrorless like the M50 and get the Viltrox adapter. I'm rocking this combination.

Oh no! I'm too late to warn you.
You've made a huge mistake!

Just kidding, I had the much older brother, the Canon S2 IS (2005, 5MP) and I loved that camera. It is so versatile.
Since you specifically mentioned macro and insects, this is what I did with the S2:

When I later upgraded to the 450D (2008 12MP) and got a 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens though:

The DSLR route will cost quite a bit more though.

Any thoughts on the Nikon CoolPix P950/P1000 ?

I can't comment on those specific models, but something to keep in mind is that Nikon is much more expensive in SA than Canon.

Canon cameras are the same price or cheaper in SA than they are in the US, whereas Nikon is significantly more expensive in SA than in the US, so you can typically get a higher tier Canon for the same price as a lower tier Nikon.

Was looking at this.

Canon PowerShot SX70.

Why that over something like this?

p.s I don't own a camera but I might be looking at getting one. It's just so confusing

and got it.
Congratulations!
I have been eyeing one myself, but haven't pulled the trigger yet because Sony seems to be far superiour in terms of speed and accuracy of its autofocus, yet it's price point is unacceptable. I need to locate a well-looked after 2nd hand model though.

It's huge. Very huge.

Thanks. Wife decided to splurge on a Sony RX10
