For last year or so I have been happy with my phone camera but it seems in about two months from now I might be needing an ultra zoom camera again.

I have my eye on the Canon SX130 because they are priced at about R1300 and comes with 12x zoom. Unfortunately it seems stock is becoming an issue since this is an older model. Personally I would not mind an old model, even an S1 IS will do :p

Any suggestions or alternatives I should look at or consider? If you have an old ultra zoom you'd want to sell feel free to PM me.

I am looking for something that is as cheap as possible, preferably something that can be bought used for less than R1k.

Doubt you'll get an S1 for under a grand :/

But the SX range are pretty cameras.

Good luck!

Not Sx1 - I meant S1 Pro IS, 10x zoom 3.2mp - had two of those many years ago. Maybe I'll have to see what shows up on the Crazy Wednesday auction on BidOrBuy tomorrow.

O - sorry ...

Thought I had the S1, but you're right - it's SX1

So I ended up buying a Fuji with 6x zoom (35-210mm) for R400 : http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/56642796/Fujifilm_3_1MP_Finepix_S602_6x.html I think it will work nicely for me and it has a 1/1.7" sensor which should help a little in low light. It should also work with my dad's old Vivitar flash that he used on his Nikor film SLR year ago. I'm quite excited about the Fuji and already read the review of it on DPreview and Steves - can't wait to try it out. Weird to think its a 10 year old camera

For starters I'll use the 64mb CF card that comes with the camera but I have a SD to CFII adapter on its way from Hong Kong so soon I'll pop in a 4GB SD card and go crazy.

I've got one of those, cost a fortune when it came out back then.
