...one that will run fine on my 384kb connection.

I would like to try out an MMO that is 'sort of modern' (dunno if you get such a thing) and fairly uncomplicated to play. Must be totally free to play.

Thanks

Guildwars used to run pretty good on my old 384 line, I don't know if it constitutes the fairly modern part, but it's free to play

EVE Online is free. you make your ISK that pay for your play time
and requires very little bandwidth. my brother in law killed the speed down to 5 Kb and it still ran fine.

How long does it take to get to that point? e.g. I've got the game on steam w/ 30 days credit. How much additional rand investment would it take to get it to be self-sustaining? Assuming average individual & time investment.

Runes of Magic (Initial download and updates are bit big)
Rappelz (same with size)

RoM looks more like WoW.

I tried Perfect World for a bit, think the initial download was about 3 Gigs. I ran it on a 384 with no problems at all.

you can prob get there in 30 days if you crunch complexes for the first month.
if you dont then the one additional month will cost you about R125

You would need to make more than 250m ISK (in-game currency) per month to purchase PLEX (an in-game time card). If you're a loner in MMO's, this wil be difficult at first and will take atleast 3 months. If you work well with others, you might achieve this in a month and a half. Be prepared to spend alot of time playing if you intend to pay for you addiction using in-game currency.

Guild Wars is good example of 100% free to play, you need only to buy the game activation key (account). Not sure, what do you mean by "uncomplicated" and "sort of modern".

Game consists of 3 complete parts, which could be played separately and appended together later. Also game has 1 expansion pack, which requires any of 3 parts to play.

Low bandwidth requirements. Activation key comes with discs. The most recent disc (the expansion one) has most complete game file, but still requires around 400-500MB updates.

Usually it's sold in trilogy sets today (all 3 games + expansion) for R262.

I have Guild Wars already - maybe I should start playing again...

By modern I mean like not set in some ancient time.

Thanks guys for the replies. I guess I'll be leaving the 30days unused then. Don't need another time + money draining activity.

i don't know anything about gaming but i just came across a game called 9 DRAGONS which is a MMORPG game and is free but i don't know how old this info is.

hhahaha,

dont lie to the poor man.

after 1 month of playing EVE - it will take you almost every waking moment playing to make enough money to buy a plex.

Seriously - eve is one of the biggest time sinks inthe history of MMORPG's, and the game sucks until you can leave "safe" space, and if you know noone / have no friends playing.

This is from experience, of playing eve for almost 5 years.

Find something else to play, or buy someone else's 40m Skill point character and start playing...its a crappy option, but its an option.

Another free MMORPG game is Archlord. There is three races: Human's, Orc's and Moonelf's. Each race has three different classes as well.
Human's: Archer, Knight, Mage
Orc's: Hunter, Bezerker, Sorcerer
Moonelf's: Ranger, Swashbukler, Elementalist

Free to download and play (about 1.8gb) with regular updates and patches also for free.
You can spend real world money on the game if you want to buy WCoin C & P to buy Chantra shop items and gold for ingame purchases (like armour, weapons and other items from the item trader). You also earn Gold ingame when fighting mosters but that takes a long time to build up a large purse.

Check it out at: Archlord Home Page

League of Legends is a DotA spinoff game made by the same people. Free to download and play. You unlock champions with points earned in game, but you can buy them with real money too, but not necessary.

I like it because you can play one game that lasts maybe 45 minutes and then leave it there. Not a massive time-sink like other games (WoW) and ideal for me as I don't want to spend excessive amounts of time in front of the PC. Perfect for just unwinding a bit at the end of the day and over weekends. Also, no peer pressure.

Checked out Dream of Mirror Online a while ago as well, but was not impressed by it. The best thing about it is the anime-style characters, but absolutely no gameplay value for me.
