I can recommend the Toyota Etios, it is basic, but has a/c, a few airbags, 1.5litre engine, and is phenomenally economical. Does not have the greatest handling, but the motor is punchy and the gearing perfect, and for a cheapie, it gets you where you want to be.
And it has resale value ( said for those who despise the brand��) It also comes with 2 year service plan and the usual 3 year warranty. I have put 7000 flawless kays on mine since November 2013, and love to hit the road with it because it sips petrol.

Had an Etios rental recently - brand new. Did not like. Rattled (did I say brand new?).

BUT, with 4 people in the car, the fuel consumption really impressed me.
