Looking for a good locksmith - Randburg

I can see imperfections in that cut, just based on that photo and I'm not even a locksmith.

Unlucky maumau, hopefully they do a better job than that.
 
Yeah ! This type of mortice key can get tricky....Once again, usually the duplicate should work first time. Judging from the pic posted, seems like the blank used is of a inferior quality ( They are all pewter by the way) You can get mild steel ( if the outlet stocks it ) but you will pay more for that, as they are more expensive. Seems that there is one of two problems with this key cut.... 1) The mortice machine that is duplicating this blank has a ( not so sharp cutting blade ) any longer and needs to either be sharpened or replaced and 2) Too much pressure is being used on the wire brush cleaning off all the burr from the cut key. These type of mortice keys need to be cut with sharp blades and set perfectly in the machine with a preferably decent pewter key blank. I would ask for a refund and get it cut else where.

Will do exactly that, thank you Marius for helping me decide.

Speaking of inferior quality blanks :( :( :( I have ordered 2 from Yale. Will try UrBan's place.

Yale have been quite helpful, I sent them a picture of the original key and they told me which number blanks to buy.

Awesome. Hope you don't have to experience that any time soon again, it is really stressful. Feel free to ask any future key or lock problems that arise, i will help were i can. :p

The locksmith is called Campbells tel: 011 787 2506.

The shop isn't like any locksmith I've been into before. Spotlessly clean, numerous gleaming machines and two friendly staff members in uniform.

I had four keys cut - they were handed to me on a professional looking keyring and they all work perfectly.

I'm a locksmith. You can't compare keys accurately by just staring at them. Provided the correct blank was used, if you want to compare keys before walking out, you'll need a caliper at least.

If I had to take a guess, I'm betting the cutting machines at the place OP went to isn't calibrated properly.

EDIT: Didn't see the pic posted. That key was simply cut like my backside.

First time the key was too thick to fit into the lock, second time he filed it down so much I thought it would break in the lock. Third time it fits into the lock but doesn't turn.

Just prior to my OP I had an ordinary gate key cut at the Mica next door. Also fits but doesn't turn - original on the right:

I was a Locksmith, I agree , That key was simply cut like your backside ( not that I have seen it :D )
