Hi all

My old Athlon lappy has run its course and now needs to be replaced. I tend to like to get machiens that I know will last quite a few years before needing to be replaced. I was thinking maybe an i5 or i7 with a sort of upper mid range Nvidia GPU like a 740M or something (maybe ATI but I do run Linux and ATI has a tendency to stop supporting graphics processors after a few years on Linux, still I don't think this is a deal-breaker).

Anyway I was hoping to get away with something around R7000 but looking around at prices I'm not sure that is going to be possible. I'm guessing I'm looking more at between 8k and 9k on a rare good deal. Anyone got any news about good deals for the performance bracket I'm looking at?

Thanks guys.

12k odd is quite a bit out of my budget. Having it serviced should something go wrong under warranty would also likely be a problem?

Maybe you can look at the Envy 15 (without touch!) that FNB has?

If you're a student at a University, then the best that you can do is R11k for a Lenovo i7 4700MQ + GF 750M @ R11k: http://lenovo.studenttech.co.za/initiative/#!page/prodlist/prodid/15436/cat/789

For R7000 you can perhaps get an i5 with integrated graphics at places like Makro/Incredible Connection if you're lucky.

LaptopDirect has a Lenovo Haswell i5 4200M laptop for R7.3k: http://www.laptopdirect.co.za/Lenovo-LENOVO-G510-59395923-lp-86400.php
Finally settled on a laptop. For a little over a grand more than that Lenovo I managed to pick up an MSI running an i5 4200M with an Nvidia 740m. Screen is also 1600x900 which is nice.

Was the best price I could find.

I unfortunately am no longer a student. If I was that lenovo looks very attractive at 11k.

Takealot's BidOrbuy store. Got that same Lenovo for R6700, delivered.
huh I didn't know there was such a thing. They have some nice Core i5 machines there for under 7k. Intel HD graphics but for 7k still isn't a bad deal.
