Hi

My laptop was stolen over the weekend :

Dell XPS17 702x (i7 2670QM processor)
1 x 500Gb hdd + 1 x 256Gb SSD
3d screen
16Gb RAM

I'm looking for a replacement, but the above unit is EOL. Can anyone recommend something in the same range (especially that it can hold 2 hdd's)? Insurance will be paying out about R27k.

Can't find one that has a 3D screen:

The following can only have a maximum of 8GB of ram.

Asus Multimedia Series N75SL 17.3" Notebook Computer (N75SL-V2G-TZ034X)

Look at this one also, though there might not be stock: Asus Multimedia Series N76VM 17.3" Notebook PC

These two laptops can have a maximum of 16GB of ram, however they are gamer orientated:

Asus Gaming Series G55VW 15.6" Notebook Computer

Asus Gaming Series G75VW 17.3" Notebook Computer

You can swap out one of the 750GB hard drives for a SSD. I would recommend you this one:

OCZ Vertex 4 256GB Solid State Drive

I was able to find your laptop here: http://laptop.co.za/laptops-sales-rentals/buy.php?p=Dell-XPS-17-L702X-Processor-In~NBDEX17376406W7

Although I wouldn't recommend getting it since I personally have never heard of them, you would also need to upgrade the Ram since it comes with 2x2GB.

With that price you can get some very good laptops and have change.
Asus N76VZ with 16gb memory, blu ray writer, dual ssd and hdd comes to mind, but there will be others

Hmm... that looks good.

Why only 8Gb RAM? Does it only have 1 slot?

Decided that I'll be getting the Asus N76VZ, fitting it with a 256Gb Samsung 840 Pro. Will have to live with the 8Gb RAM. Thanks.

the n76vz can be upgraded to 16gb memory. also not sure why you need 16gb but if you do, just upgrade to 16gb once you have your new toy

The spec says 8Gb max.

why do you need 16GB of ram?

Usually, I have 5 or 6 instances of Visual Studio 2012, Chrome with about 50 tabs, Outlook, 2 or 3 Remote Desktop sessions etc open. Memory is cheap, don't want the cheap stuff to cause me to slow down.

No it can only take up to 8GB of Ram.

No it can only take up to 8GB of Ram.

Definitely not, the model I have seen and might be getting in December has up to 16gb, also comes with 2 x 500gb hdd, so I would take one out and also replace it with SSD and then use the other 500gb for storage.
the only reason why I might get a Lenovo Y580 is that I have no use for a blu ray burner that the Asus comes with.

We say the max is 8GB because we have tested it. However this laptop is able to do more however we are not responsible if anything happens. The reason why they are able to boot with 16GB is because they have a different bios setup. Have you tried speaking with a tech support from xotic pc to see if you can download their bios and other programs that they have installed. Just be aware that you are doing this at your own consent that if your laptop no longer works that is not our fault.

They are are putting on a different BIOS to make it boot with 16GB of ram.

The laptop officially supports 8GB of ram. Not to mention that thread isn't even about the laptop OP is getting. And just because a very specific speed of ram works doesn't mean you can tell the OP that the laptop supports 16GB of ram. He would have to specifically look for that ram.

You only tell the OP what is officially supported.

Almost. You have to buy hyper-ram with extremely high margins to get the computer to boot with 16Gb. But that ram will still have to run at much lower frequencies than what it supports (the forced timing). Or timing that it wasn't really made to run at. You still need that high-speed hyper-ram, however, because /some/ of the forced timings are a bit steep.

I.e., new chips are a terrible waste of money, even if they work. Because they'll run at lower speeds than they could, and might actually be unstable.

Or, your perfectly well made 1.35v chips (that can be just as expensive), with timing and volt that fits a laptop more than a desktop (shorter delays, safe frequencies, less heat, quicker response) -- will just fail to boot altogether.

I.e., definitely a complete waste of money.

Tried 1866MHz RAM and it either freeze or BSOD, not only N56VZ but all models with 3rd Gen CPU:

Done wasting my time discussing this, the laptop officially supports up to 8GB of ram, take it or leave it.

I might be getting one of these from an overseas supplier and if I do they will upgrade it to 16GB, so it supports it, regardless of what you say.
chillax though, you getting agro for no reason, we just discussing if it can take 16gb or not and it looks like it can, unofficially of course.
.

Careful with the Asus N76VZ, I see it has the same cursor key layout as mine.
You're going to hate those small cursor keys if you do development, it's one of the main reason I wanted the G75.

The rest of the machine looks fantastic though.

Interesting that you say that.
Actually looking to replace an older Asus ROG, I just find it a bit heavy and bulky and it gets hot so wasn't keen to go the same route even though they say the new G75VW are 33% lighter or whatnot. Looking at a lighter laptop such as the N76VZ or the Lenovo Y580. busy playing with a loan Y580 from someone, trying to get it setup with an mSata SSD and if it works well then will probably just end up keeping the Lenovo.

Correct, if you use CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 it will work, just install the RAM and you are good to go without mod BIOS.

Got that exact set of modules... will test them this afternoon.

it gets hot

Hmm, if there's one thing a ROG notebook should not do it's the heat thing (unless of course you want to work on the bed or something and the vents get blocked).
