Basically something I can plug into my laptop and still use even after a power failure. (untill the battery dies obviously)

USB prefered, for normal PC use as well, dont really want a PCMCIA card for it.

Any recommendations?

Look around for one of the usb speedtouch adsl modems. You wont find any usb router. Routers connect using ethernet ports.

Yes I know, I just want the USB device to get its power from the laptop/PC incase of power failure.

Well Koeberg #2 has been fixed you know unless you are at the tender mercies of the clueless and incompetent City Power :).

Do you mean a USB ADSL Modem???

A router allows multiple devices to share 1 connection, a modem allows 1 device to use the connection.

Sincerely,

I want one that does the following.

1. ADSL line comes in
2. ethernet ports on the other side for my home network (2 PC's and 1 laptop)
3. wireless access to browse anywhere in the house
4. it must be powered by a USB connection

Anything like that on the market? :)

the device you are looking for is called UPS, although it is not powered by usb, if you have only a wireless router connected to it, it will last for couple of hours easily

No I dont want a Universal Power Supply, I want a USB powered ethernet/adsl modem with wireless capability.

You want to run 2 pc's during a power failure - consider getting a generator.

Unless you have 2 or more laptops wireless is pretty useless during a power cut as the device has to be powered by one of them.

I dont want to run 2 PC's during a power failure, I only want to run my laptop and be able to use the net to entertain myself during a power failure.

I think you're going to need 2 devices. One adsl router with wifi for normal everyday use and one usb adsl modem for when the power is out. Right?

You're prolly right, I was just wondering if any devices like I want exist on the market, if not I'll have to buy 2 devices.

Think of it this way - there might be a device like that but it would suck some serious juice if you had to power it from your laptop.

not to mention you need to keep it plugged into your laptop for power - kinda kills the portability of the laptop

Well he could keep it plugged into one of the desktops.

the whole point of it is to get power when theres a power failure. plugging it in a desktop pc aint gonna help

I understand that but ZA_medic mentioned keeping it plugged into the laptop during normal operating use would kill the portability of the laptop - as neio required wireless - also for normal operating use - I suggested plugging it in to a desktop. For power cut use wireless is impossible as it needs to draw power from the laptop.

Yeah and then when the power fails I unplug it from the desktop and plug it into my laptop.
I cant think of one that does everything you want and is still bus powered :o

well neio, not sure what the issue with the UPS is, but I have my setup with wireless and laptop and a UPS, and it works like a charm during power failure. Besides that you can plug your laptop in the UPS as well, once its battery is out, assuming you don't have one of those hyper low voltage Sony laptops that lasts 9 hours, your latop battery will last most likely around 3 hours max, if you plug your laptop into a ups, you get easily another 8-12 hours + the adsl/wireless router device ... also you can charge your cell phone/mp3 player too ... it works really well for me, I am actually thinking of setting up one of those energy efficient bulbs to take power from the ups, so I don't stay in the dark. UPSs last really long time if you have really low power devices plugged in.
