Hi Guys,

I am currently working in the IT field but would love to move into DevOps, I have so far looked for jobs, but most require experience and/or qualifications in a few programming and database languages, which I do not have, what would be the optimal job to get me into DevOps?

I discussed the above with our Network Manager and he advised getting into a helpdesk role that can grow into devops, I have been looking for the past month on PNET but have not seen any such jobs, am I using the wrong search criteria?

I have coding experience in Delphi if that counts for anything.

You would ideally need to get into a systems administrator role and then supplement that with a programming language..

Here is a nice roadmap reference to help you get an idea of the different aspects of a DevOps role..

What do you do in said IT field?

our Network Manager and he advised getting into a helpdesk role

I would skip this step and go straight into looking for a Jnr. Sysadmin role.

From what I've seen, there's a massive shortage in skilled workers that are highly proficient with "Linux". I would personally start here.

From an outsiders perspective I won't know everything that our internal-facing DevOps team does, but most of them have strong C# skills, they handle our repositories, which are on Azure DevOps or the on prem MS equivalent.
They are also in charge of our own npm and NuGet registries.
Setting up and configuring build servers/VMs.
And finally, while we have a lot of control over our dev PAAS services, they are the ones who are ultimately in charge and responsible for monitoring usage and ensuring performance.

The most straight forward option, if you have the money, is to do an MS Azure Fundamentals exam ($55), and from there do the Azure DevOps exam. I have done a couple of Azure certs with instructor led leanring, and I don't think it's worth the money as the free MS course material is not only sufficient, but also a necessity even if you do have paid training.

AFAIK you need to do AZ-104 before you can go into AZ-400. AZ-900 is optional though. Unless this changed from the last time I checked.
Agree on the MS learn material. Not only is it great, but it allows you to play around in their own sandbox environment without incurring costs.

I didn't do the DevOps path, so don't know the prerequisites. I literally just did "a couple" :D
I need to actually use what I learned more regularly before doing more courses, otherwise I'll end up with certifications without the experience to effectively apply what my certification says I know.

The AZ Fundamentals exams (data, ai and azure) are free if you register and watch the MS webinars for them:

That being said I would personally focus on my system administration skills and understanding of core concepts - before I bothered to leap in to cloud (as a complete beginner) and get immediately overwhelmed.

The Roadmap @WAslayer shared is a good idea of the skillset you'll need.

Usually it's a decent mix of:
Fundamentals --> OS (usually Linux) --> Config management --> Orchestration --> Programming --> CI/CD --> Cloud

Any of the Cloud provider DevOps exams are going to be specific to the DevOps based services that the specific cloud provider offers and is not going to cover the 'non-cloud' DevOps aspects as such..

While it's a nice cert to have on your CV, only really so for companies already in the cloud or looking to move there..

Agreed

I am also looking to make the move into DevOps. I'm wanting to do this one first.

How do I prepare for this? Is this a course you purchase somewhere online and receive manuals and such? Any advice greatly appreciated.

If it's like most MS courses:

  1. Buy the books/media/lessons and learn
  2. Book for the exam online through PearsonVue at a local examiner.
You can pretty much go on your own steam through the materials. Find or buy additional material through YouTube, Udemy, etc...

There might be a Coursera course that hooks into the academic pathway all the way up to super duper level.

Could be. You'll find a lot of free and paid material. MS would have published their official book on the course too.

Ultimately, you know what you need to study (syllabus available from MS) and I guess most people can do it themselves. There's also braindumps, etc... to test yourself against.

Then you simply need to knock down the exams one by one. Good luck.
