One of my mates is looking at buying a new GPUI, currently he has a GT 740, but would like something better. He has about R3500 to spend, what would you recommend... was thinking of R9 280x, but is there something better then the R9 in that price range.

R380 would be the best bet. Cheapest card with great dx12 support.

I'm also pondering an upgrade to my GTX 760. The R9 290 seems to be very powerful, but incredibly noisy - Any comments on that?

The ref design cards are extremely hot and noisy lol

You need buy one with a aftermarket cooler.

OP, if you want the best value possible go to Carbonite and buy secondhand. I recently bought a Sapphire HD7990 for R3k. That's more powerful than a GTX 980.

You can't be serious?

You're selling a 950 for the same price as Wootware sells a 960. Wow.

Those prices are in line with what Rebel Tech charges. You get overpriced versions of most cards.

You should probably stick to recommending cards that offer at least a modicum of value.

After looking around a bit more, I've come to the conclusion that the R9 390 is the way to go. Any reason NOT to buy this card?

Nope I Love mine ! Runs like a dream!

The fans also does not turn on until 60c on the R9 390. Keeping it silent when you do not game.

I'm waiting for 2016. Zen will be released and also the R9 4xx series of card from AMD.
We should see a drop in price for current generation of cards.

But then again, if we keep on waiting for the next thing, we will always be waiting ...

Nope.

R9 390 > GTX 970
R9 380 > GTX 960

All other segments go to nvidia.

My 9 290 is a bit noisy under heavy load. But my box is right next to me on the desk. If I was to move it under the desk it should not even bother me. I use headphones though so I never hear it anyway :D

I think in this particular case it is worth waiting, because graphics cards were on 28nm for AGES. Plus, HBM2 is incoming. I'm hoping the next generation of video cards offers quite a jump.

Nope.

I was pondering a 970, but the R9 390 appears to mostly kick its ass, so an easy decision, given they are about the same price. Awesome stuff.

From what I can see, the R9 390 is a big improvement on noise levels in comparison.

Truth be told, I bought the 290 just before the 390 came out. Else I probably would have taken a 390 too. But I'm EXTREMELY happy with my 290 /love
