So with this load shedding becoming a regular thing, I've decided to pick up a really cheap portable computer. It doesn't need to do anything beyond some basic word processing, but I would prefer an AMD machine for the odd occasion I decide to fire up an old game to kill some time with, or watch a HD movie, but I'm struggling to find them locally.

Any suggestions?

I don't understand the need for AMD?
You could just as easily find a cheap laptop with Nvidia that will work as well if not better.

Well basically I want it to be able to run older games and don't want to spend much at all. Not sure what Intel's onboard is like these days but I heard the AMD apu's are still quite a bit faster than Intel's counterparts.

TLDR: I don't mind getting a slower CPU if the onboard graphics runs faster.

Thanks. That Lenovo is basically what I'm looking for. Will see if I can track one down since I don't have an account with esquire.

Don't go for the G505, you'll be tearing your hair out more often than actually enjoying anything with decent frame rates. The GPU performance on the E1-1200 is pretty much cut in half because there's only a single memory controller on-board. If you were asking this same question a few weeks ago, Acer had a stupidly good value Aspire V5 with a quad-core A6 series APU, which would have done most older games justice.

You can have a look at this:

Lenovo Flex 14 (AMD A6-6310 quad) @ R3703

Considering what you're getting in that whole package, it's a sweet deal, easily kicking most Intel offerings at the same price range in the teeth. Much better than that stupid little Dell with an E1 APU for R4k over at Takealot. If I find anything more, I'll post it here.

Also, don't expect anything other than 720p, low everything for most games. Yes, it has a iGPU based on the GCN architecture and it can run Mantle, but it's not going to boost performance all that much.

Did the price change on the Flex 14?

Its R5851 now or was it on special?

Thanks for the heads up. I'll take a look.
