For personal use.

I would essentially want a laser printer, colour of course. If those aren't cost effective, could you suggest a reasonable inkjet for home use?

This will be for myself. I want to print some photos and work related stuff, so it won't be under too heavy load.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Lasers are pretty expensive these days but it all depends on what your view of "expensive" is... DO you have a budget to work on? What lind of price range are you looking at?

Just googled and saw I might need to give the lasers a miss, it's just too expensive.

My budget is below R1K. Which means I can just as well settle for an all in one solution. I saw a few Canon AIO at Zaps for under R700, so that gives me a scanner as well. What's your opinion? Should I settle for something like this (inkjet though).

Don't think you'll get a laser for under R1k, definitely not a colour one. Check how much you'll be paying for cartridges as well.

I spotted some nice offers from Esquire the other day which I took a second look at..... These two caught my eye with the latter being more suited for photo printing it seems.

I had a look at cartridge prices too and they weren't bad at around R250 for each

Yep. Lasers are expensive, but work so well though :p

Canon AIO's are very decent. I have been using a Canon AIO for a few months now (also inkjet) and it works like a charm, never had problems with it.

I think you should go for it. Just remember colour ink can get very expensive but if you're just printing black then cartridge replacements shouldn't be too hefty.

EDIT: Your laser searching has just inspired me to purchase a laser printer for home :D

Cool, thanks. Glad I inspired you. Laser printers are the best though, no contest.

When looking at Lasers I've got a thing for Samsung's though. Their toner is cheap and the quality is fantastic. Just too bad I can't afford it :p

I'll speak with my girlfriend and probably decide end of the month what to do.

See above

The cartridges for the latter are priced at R159 and R239 for the black and colour respectively on the HPShop site and R145 and R218 on the Cartridges for Africa site to give you an idea. Not bad I reckon.

I won't voluntarily own a HP printer or device to be honest. I've serviced a few HP printers when I was a printer tech and they give me headaches to be honest. Also, no use buying ink for cheap and each day that goes by without active usage the ink dries out. Quote me on it, it's a fact.

Thanks anyway.

Each to their own. I have an HP in the study and it had not been used for over 6 months. Printed something on Thursday, no problems.

I also never plan to service it myself ;)

I've also never had a problem with HP printers.

I'v got a Canon IP4600 which is quite nice and even prints on dvds. Priced below a grand so have a look at it

Not if you want to print photos. Ink jets, while not the best, are still leagues ahead of lasers.

Fixed. I agree with you on the cheap laser printers, but not when you start comparing the top of the range colour lasers with inkjets.

I meant what I said. ;)

When you can show me a print that even comes close to my five year old epson I'll fix my comment. :)

have a canon ip3000 ( about 4 years old) . brilliant so far. single ink tanks. generic inks about R50.00 bucks each. scout around and see if still available. prints on cd's as well.
