Hey all,

I am looking for suggestions for a CCTV solution for our office, preferably from a supplier in Cape Town.

Here are a few of my requirements:

- It mustn't be too expensive (don't need super high grade stuff).
- I want a separate DVR device with optional HDD.
- Cameras and DVR must use ethernet and PoE.
- Need max 8 channels.
- Must be multi platform (i.e. must support Windows, Mac, Linux - most likely through browser interface).

The closest I found is from Uniterm (this one: http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=80&products_id=1051), but the software support worries me:

It is fully compatible with iphone, ipad and Internet Explorer on Windows operating system for multi-platform remote access.

What other options do I have in this price range?

TIA

Please could you post some details on your findings would be really interested to see what you have found in the end!

Still haven't found much. I'm leaning towards the AVTECH system from Uniterm. Nothing else I've seen fits my requirements.

Contact Reditron. They carry ranges from the entry level Dahua brand all the way up to the Hikvision (industry best). Forgot Scoop Distribution, very cost effective too.

I looked at Scoop, they don't have what I'm looking for. Reditron looks nice, but no prices on their website but the stuff looks like it's going to be way too expensive.

Eagle Electronics in Cape Town.

Thanks, they have some nice stuff but also a bit pricey.

Think I'm going to go with the AVTECH stuff from Uniterm. They have an NVR with 8 PoE ethernet ports which completely eliminates the need to get a separate PoE switch.

I will let you guys know what the stuff is like once I've got it.

If you feel like building your own system, then you can have a look at Zoneminder for the SW part. Any IP/USB camera works with it.

Their website seems to be down for me ...

and those systems from esquire? quite a few forumites love theirs.

I looked at them but...

They're not IP cameras and use BNC connectors. Will mean I have to purchase a bunch of new cable (already have a tonne of ethernet cable), means I have to power them separately too (no PoE), I cannot easily just mix and match with other brands (the IP cameras support ONVIF standard) and the resolution is not as good as the AVTECH (model I'm looking at do 720p).

It's an appealing price point, but too many cons.

Okay, went with the AVTECH.

Pretty happy so far, easy installation (except no way to do initial setup over network - you need to plug in monitor over HDMI). Having no problems with compatibility so far, the web app works fine although it's a bit crap but the desktop and mobile apps work pretty well.

PoE is king, one cable is all you need. I do think the NVR system is overpriced for what it is, but then again it just works so I'm not complaining.
