I'm looking for a renter friendly load shedding solution. I'm not looking for a trolley inverter, rather something that can connect to the DB board (obviously with the landlord's permission) and run some lights, and a few plug points for the TV, WiFi without having extension cords running throughout the house.

I live in an apartment block so I can't do solar, I need something else that could work and something that I could take with me when I move out.

same predicament as me, what I found is few of those mini UPS's for the Wifi and ONT box,
and more UPS boxes with higher ratings for TV and anything else not high on amperage, like stoves or Kettles.

best solution you can take with you, especially if you cant add anything to the DB board

Just get a trolly that can connect to the Db board. Negotiate with the owner to have him do the work or pay half.
When you leave you just take the trolly with.

EDIT: To be clear you just have some things on the DB board connected to the inverter, like lights and plugs. Geyser and big appliances should be excluded.

Thanks, yes some things won't be connected - what is the right type of trolley that can connect to the DB board?

if you get a big enough inverter/Generator, is it possible to power your entire apartment with plugging in to a wall outlet, and switching the mains off,
or is that a really bad idea?

That sounds like a bad hack

big boom? or nice fireworks?
why is it a bad idea?
Too easy to touch live portion of the plug while the other side could be powered - thus suicide plug
Also practically you're limited to 13ish amps safely before melty melty wire becomes a possibility

Its a bad idea, but what can be done is replacing the plug with a failover switch. Then will essentially work the same way.

Do you have a link for these ?

Hybrid / Axpert type should work, but you will need an electrician / qualified installer to sort things so you don't burn the place down. Preferably want a switchover that does not connect the high power appliances, such as the geyser and stove to the inverter.

DB is not plug and play.

Don't do it. Back feeding renders your earth leakage protection inoperative. You will create a ticking timebomb. The extra money spend getting an electrician to do the proper safe connection to your wiring may save someone life.

It can get warm.

Similar to a trolley but you need deep pockets. I have the river 2 which is the smallest unit for when I have to work from home etc

I run a 2000w inverter which I backfeed into a plug with the mains/earth leakage/geyser/stove breakers off.
I have a c13 female cable coming out the inverter and a c13 male suicide portion, this reduces but does not remove the suicideness.

Inverter will trip way before the plugs rating, so no melty melty, I live alone so only I connect the system.
I am very disciplined sometimes going back 3 times to make sure I turned the breakers off correctly.

If you have ANYONE else in the house I would suggest NOT going the suicide cable route, but rather as most have suggested get a sparky to put a change over or something in.
