Hi all,

I'm on the looking for decent laptops in the sub R4000 price range for my friend's mom. I don't yet know what she'll be using it for, but I'd guess some basic word processing & web browsing.

So far the best that I've come across was: http://www.dionwired.co.za/computing/computers/laptops/lg-notebook-4615.html @ R3,599
INTEL I3 390M
15.6'' Lcd Led Backlight
320GB Hard Drive
2GB memory
Windows7 home Basic
1 Year warranty

Laptops that are slightly above R4k would probably be OK still, as long as they are good value for money ;)

Thanks in advance

Not bad and probably perfect for her. Also check to see if it comes with Microsoft Office Starter - its good enough for 90% of home users. I just bought a laptop and can say that in the R4-R7K range your just getting either a smaller screen, a better graphics (ATI/Nvidia) or a Home Premium instead of office.

For my wife and daughter I got them both entry level lappies (one a Lenova with a dual core celeron and the other a Compaq CQ56) and both lappies are more than what they need. My wife uses hers for photos & Pastel.

That sounds like a bulky machine. Check on that.
My preference would be something like this:
http://tinyurl.com/6ggaxbx

It's a netbook on steroids - uber portable but nice sized screen/keyboard. Has Bluetooth, Wifi, VGA, HDMI, SD Card reader, Webcam, blah blah. Just no optical drive, but that's an easy one to work around if you need to. My wife loves hers - very portable and fast.

Post the full URL or I won't click. Without seeing the url how is someone supposed to know if you're trying to send them to a page full of flying dicks?

Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated.

I'll ask my colleague again if she would rather prefer something smaller than a 15.6" laptop or not.

Anyone else unable to access Esquire's website? Or is it just my Mweb connection?

I think you're confusing my link with this one:
http://tinyurl.com/flyingdicks

But if you want a longer one, here:

Seriously, try it. Why the heck must I post a three line URL that will likely end up being *** by the filter? I think the flying things are in your head. :p

OR

Don't click ROFL.

I actually made a mistake: the laptop would be for my colleague/friend's grandmother and not for his mom, so a laptop with a big screen would be preferred.

Those Esquire links worked at my office, but they were only valid till 17th of Sept :(
I don't have an Esquire account yet, but I'll probably get one if they can courier stuff, which I doubt they do?

Why would they need to courier it?

You should be the one sending a courier that is what i do. No ways am i gonna sit in midrand traffic when it costs 65 smackers for the courier guy to do it.

@kd: Which courier service do you use? Is that the price for occasional use or a bulk discounted price?

No that is the price for normal once off collections, you get bulk collections that are 20-25 rand as well but i just use the standard service of R 65.00 also the cheaper price is more expensive if there is 4 or moves boxes, i think they charge 20 per extra box where as the 65 rand one is only 10 per box.

The courier guy is very good though, never had any issues thus far.

I use The courier guy
If you have many items you need collected fastway have a prepaid service which works out at 15 bucks a collection but you obviously need to pay say 2k for x amount of collections which doesn't suite me and i know the courier guy are sharp.

Not sure how much same day is but i think it is around 95 or 110 but you must phone before 10:30.

Thanks killa. I think that I may be needing TCG's services in the future ...
