Why on earth would I want Stage 8 load-shedding?

Truth be told, we all need it as a reminder that we can no longer place our trust in Eskom to provide our homes with power. We need focus on our independence so today I spend some time upgrading a few things to 12Volt that way I don't need an inverter anymore.

My new game is this: How low can it go...

Good luck converting Aircon, Freezer, stove, kettle, microwave and geyser to 12V :D

Soo much simpler & cheaper to just get an inverter and upgrade solar as time moves on.

I did not say they don't exist, just that they more difficult to source and a tad bit pricy.

I get very happy when the currency depreciates. I know it's wrong but it makes my ZAR based debt cheaper, leaving more for my inevitable emigration. I have so much empathy for everyone earning rands.
 
I think a few of you realized I was being very sarcastic with the title.

But I honestly do think it is time to really consider off-grid as a normal and aim for it. Solar is far from perfect but until they give us nuclear-powered hamsters to run on little wheels to generate power we are stuck with what we have now.

So in all seriousness if you find a solution that can run on DC only please post it so we all can learn from it.

I am converting what I can to DC... But I have invested in a 5.5KVA inverter that should be here next week. It is a 48Volt system but I decided against Lithium as I can't really justify the cost. So I will be going with 12V 100Ah Gel batteries as I found a supplier that sells them for about R2.3k each. That means in total a bank will cost R9.2k give or take. cheapest Lithium 48Volt I can get sits at 32k for that amount I can but a lot more batteries and also get to the 200Ah mark.

To all the Lithium people, if you can afford it more power to you seriously. Me I can't see the value. So the idea here is to just build a massive battery backup system and focus on the solar part of it later. Reason is I might still move and their is no point in setting up a system only to take it down again.

Come back to us in a year when you are replacing batteries and tell us if you still cant see the value

You'll replace your lead batteries 5 times or more before someone with a lithium system notices the beginnings of a capacity drop.
