Looking to buy a MacBook, but...

Hey!

I have been looking to buy a Macbook for quite a while.... and have been saving for even longer :)

I was just wondering where to buy it. I'm in Cape Town, and went to Project3, but I have been told before that you can get them cheaper online. But I checked out www.zastore.co.za, but they were exactly the same price. R15999 for the 13" 2.0GHz MacBook.

Does anyone know of places where I can get it - either online or in-store, for less than Project3?

I dunno how ebucks work, but I hear u can score quite a lot by buying from look and listen If u have an fnb card. Maybe check that out as an option...
 
Digicape at Roeland street is the only other Apple Premium Reseller in CT.

The advantage with going for a Premium reseller is that they have in-house technical service and you'll generally find staff to be a bit more knowledgeable than say Incredible Connection. Although quite often I go in store after having done a little research online and Staff (or MacNuggets as I like to call them) are like a rabbit stuck in front of headlights.

Prices are generally the same everywhere. Unless you're shagging a store manager, the only other way you can get a substantial discount is if you're a student. Or know a student well enough, who can make the purchase for you :rolleyes:
 
I would suggest buying from an Apple Premium Reseller - it may be R400 more than Shop and Ship but you will have peace of mind if anything goes awry.

Personally, I would recommend Digicape, they are reliable and a great crowd to deal with. Check out their website at http://www.digicape.co.za
 
I believe they gonna have a special soon, so keep a look out. Also new Apple blog coming soon for us SA's.

Hey guys, I thought I should give an update on my situation regarding that MacBook I wanted to buy. After quite a while searching the Internet for the best price (plus a store that looks decent and respectable - some of them look shocking, which is scary when handing over R15k) but I have finally put in an order for my 13" MacBook 2.0GHz. I paid R15399 for it, so the R600 I save will go towards Parallels. (Unless people here think VMWare is better?!)

The online store is called "A7". I ordered from them on Thursday (07/05) and they say I will receive it this Monday (11/05) - so watch this space! They look pretty slick and I am hoping things will turn out good, as I have not heard of them before. Found them on a Google ad.

I will let you all know as soon as I have it in my hands!
 
I definitely suggest using Parallels. Ive tried both and parallels won hands down all the time. I use it for Windows XP, and Windows 7 to test my websites in windows.

I like VMWare fusion. It's always worked perfectly for me.

I guess they're both good!

There's also a free option - Sun's Virtualbox

I gotta disagree, i would pig vmfusion anyday. Not even because of personal preference, purely because it works better. I have had countless parallels problems, although the new vm fusion version is slightly buggy (and slower for some odd reason) i would still go for it. Demo both and see which you like.

Yeah I guess its a matter of preference or what works best for you. I have never had hassles with parallels but endless ones with VMWARE. Like tau1z says, download the demo of both and see what works best for you. Let us know.
 
You should budget R1000 for Snow Leopard as well, will allegedly be out in a few months time.
Possibly before SEACOM get here.

Hello Alf101,

You gave me quite a fright! But that is the white MacBook with slower memory, smaller HDD etc (and that price excludes VAT). I paid R15399 for the new aluminium MacBook 2.0GHz (which was like R15999 at Incredible Connection and the iStore).

MY MACBOOK ARRIVED! Sorry for the delay but I have been playing with it all afternoon. It arrived this morning by Fedex. So I guess I can safely recommend "A7" to anyone wanting to buy Apple products! In my experience, they have been great. They even gave me a 2GB flash drive just because I had to wait over the weekend to my MacBook :cool:

As for VMWare or Parallels, I think I am doing to organise a few demos before I make my choice, as opinions have been quite divided here :)

I prefer VMWare myself
 
I just intalled Windows 7 now using Parallels and I must say that its smooth. I havent tried with other software installed but im happy with it. The installation went smooth but I dont have sound - no drivers. I do have wireless. havent tried the rest yet.
