ADSL price war triggered

Johannesburg - Internet service provider group WirelessG has dropped its ADSL prices by 25%, ahead of the launch of undersea cable Seacom on Thursday.

Seacom runs up the east coast of Africa delivering 1.3 terabits per second of bandwidth to the continent.

It was scheduled to go live in June, but this was postponed because of piracy threats off the African coast.

Said CEO of WirelessG, Carel van der Merwe, "I do think Seacom will have a positive effect on the market, but it will not be the cure-all. For really amazing cost reductions, service providers will have to re-engineer their business processes and look for efficiencies they're not currently exploiting."

According to Van der Merwe, the price drop sees WirelessG's prepaid ADSL access rates decrease from 6.5c per MB to 4.9c per MB; during its happy hour (between 17:00 and 20:00 daily) prices will drop to 4.5c per Mb from 4.7c per MB.

"That's a 25% decrease over our previous normal rate," he said.

w00t, 1st company that ran out of excuses and willing to admit it, now the rest... cummon

As long as one starts the rest will fold like a pack of cards. I was waiting for a bank/cellphone company standoff where everyone keeps their prices artificially high. However, I think the ISP sphere is a lot more competitive, especially amongst your smaller ISPs trying to claw their way in.

ok, so anyone know what the axxess ad on mybb for uncapped at R799 is about? looks like the ads go up faster than their website changes... cant see details of it.

OK, so the one time my AdBlock Plus shouldn't be blocking something...

It's just a pity that WirelessG's prepaid ADSL product is so utterly unusable.

Without deviating too much from the original topic, I am interested in Deweyzeph comments about the adsl being unusable. What exactly makes it unusable?

You have to authenticate yourself using a web-based interface.

I have been battling to get connected - and have been told to reset my modem settings. I have managed to set up Telkom and Axxess successfully.

When I queried why authentication was done that way, I couldnt really get a good answer.

Either way the new rates are pretty good. I just have to question whether the other major isp's will follow this - G Connect is a new player in the market and surely does not have the name/brand and sort of subscriber numbers that will force the other ISP's to act.
It would be a different altogether if Telkom or even Axxess or Web Africa dropped their rates by 25%. A case of G Connect jumping the gun perhaps?

I hope that I am proved wrong.

so im guessing the axxess add for R799 uncapped is not something new cause no ones talking about it...
