Can anyone assist please? I am loosing bandwidth at an alarming rate. I am using IBurst wireless. It has been a month and a half now since I bought my new PC and joined IBurst and I have not been able to solve the problem.
I have been in contact with Microsoft and the ISP, but cannot get to the bottom of this problem. I have Netlimiter monitoring IP addresses using my bandwidth. It is showing under the SVC Host. I am blocking these IP addresses via the Windows 7 firewall as they become a problem.
I have done all the normal checks for Spyware, Malware etc. I have also done the Microsoft online scan and there seems to be no threats lurking on my PC.
I have traced many of these IP addresses back to a company called Akamai Technologies. They do hosting for big companies like Microsoft & Adobe, to name a few. I have also tried to contact these guys but to no avail.
I have switched off my automatic updates on Windows as well.
This situation is very frustrating as I need to keep on checking Netlimiter if I am not loosing any bandwidth at any given time.
The other problem is that when some of these IP addresses are blocked it sometimes causes issues with surfing the net.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,

It's the best anti everything.... Set security high and allow stuff you are certain are valid applications etc...

It is showing under the SVC Host.
SVC stands for services. Hold down the windows key & hit R. Type in "services.msc" (without quotation marks). One of these is causing the downloads. They are a mixture of operating system services and application related stuff.

Switch off windows updating (in the control panel). Then start disabling all update related services one by one, except the windows one until you find the culprit. You might have to restart after each if the services launches an external updating app. Stopping the service won't kill the updating app, so the d/l won't stop immediate but rather only after a restart. Careful though...you can break your OS by messing with the services. ;)

My money is on adobe. They have a really shtty auto updater that never behaves & wants to download endless gigabytes.

On some operating system, you can narrow down SVC to a specific service/handful of services using ProcMon + TCPview, both from the Microsoft site. Just tried it on Win7 x64 though...doesn't work. I think it did under vista x86 though.

You won't be able to sort this out by investigating the akamai side. You have to troubleshoot it locally.

Edit: services.msc is disabled on the Home windows editions.

Thanks Guys,
The SVC Host seems to be where the problem is. I will try it and see if it solves the problem. I have thought about Adobe but I could not find where to switch off any updates on it. It all makes sense though.

In Adobe click edit, select prefrences, click updater, select radio button - Do not download updates .... ( I assume this is for Adobe reader)

Thanks, I disabled Adobe auto updates.
The problem still persists. I checked out the Services and cannot see any application service started while loosing bandwidth. I did however stop the "Windows Update" service which should stop any other program from performing automatic updates. I restarted the PC and the problem continued. I then restarted the service again.
I am not sure which other services to stop as they do not seem to be linked to a specific application but rather to the Windows system.
Any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,

Tried a packet sniffer yet?

Install http://www.winpcap.org/install/default.htm followed by http://www.wireshark.org/download.html

Could also try http://www.techmixer.com/free-network-packet-analyzer-download-layerview/

If memory serves me right there is a way to break down the svchost traffic from the command line but right now I cannot find anything on it it.

You could also check services running via msconfig

Also try: “C:\>tasklist /svc /FI “IMAGENAME EQ svchost.exe”
and: netstat -bv (use the help for other options)

My guess is spyware / adware or malware. Often attach themselves to svchost.exe. Scan with Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware, once all the scans are complete and you have removed the found items. Then reboot and let us know if the problem persists. All the above software can be googled and downloaded free of charge.

Thanks for all the advice. Funny thing is, after I spoke to my ISP last week, for the 100th time, the problem stopped after a day or two and has been fine for about a week now. Did not receive any feedback from them as yet, but getting feedback also seems like a nightmare anyway.
I will still run Malware etc. just to make 100% sure and let you know.

Maybe there is a fishy employee @ your ISP, thats stealing your bandwidth, did you reset your password via the control interface since having this account? Or are you using the password supplied by your isp on first signup?
