Anyone has this issue?

Bought the 60gb usb R2999 promotion last night - but trying it out today and can't seem to get it to stay connected for more than 20 seconds.

For those initial 20 seconds everything is great, 140kb/s download, websites load quickly, but then it grinds to a halt.

Can't connect or ping anything. Windows and the cellc application still say I'm connected though.

I'm in the center of Cape Town CBD.

Any ideas?

I am sure I remember something about a firmware upgrade on the router to solve this? - maybe daydreaming

A friend of mine had a similar problem on Vodacom and it was the hang up on finish in the email program.

My Cell C worked fine till monday when I left for EL for a week.

Yeah, it's been RICA'ed.

This morning I can't do anything though, don't even have those 20 seconds.

For instance:

  • Plugged in the usb device. (indicator flashes blue every 3 seconds with no change)
  • Opened the cellc connection manager.
  • Clicked on Services, and typed in *101#:

Send:*101#
Receive:Balance = R 0.00 Expiry date : 16/08/2020. Bonus SMS's = 0. Your data is 5112.73 MBytes.

Go back and click Connect.
Authenticating..
* 30 seconds pass *
Error 710: A connection to the remote computer could not be established.

I try connect again:
Connecting..
* 30 seconds pass *
The modem cannot connect until it has found an available network.

I try connect again:
Connecting Cell C
Authenticating..
Connected.

This is my statistics Page:

But trying visit any webpage, timeouts.

C:\>ping www.cellc.co.za -t
Ping request could not find host www.cellc.co.za. Please check the name and try
again.

I’m at Dorp street in Cape Town - tried on a colleagues machine, and same problem.
Plugged in my iPhone connected to Vodacom 3G - which has always worked flawlessly, able to make this post..

Emailed Cellc customer service yesterday afternoon – no response. I'll message you anyway though, and update this thread if theres a solution.

Otherwise going to return this device for a refund tomorrow.

tldr:
CellC has terrible coverage in the centre of Cape Town.

Cellc never contacted me in the end, so returned the device yesterday (5 day return window).

I'm actually glad to wash my hands of it - I've had terrible experiences with cellc in the past, and all the telltale signs of the same old bs loomed immediately.

You should have been more patient. You could have lodged a complaint on the provision that if it is not solved within 1 month than the device should be returned and spoken to someone in retentions. I once did that with vodacom who had the 7 day window period for a full return and refund. However after speaking to someone in Retentions they were resonable to extend this time period while they attempted to solve the problem. Unsure if Cell C would have extended the same courtesy though.

Joker - we are in the Cape Town CBD (higgovale) and experiencing exact same problems. Works beautifully and then randomly disconnects. It sounds like it's a tower issue. We will also be returning the modem asap within the window. Although I think the refund takes 14 days to process!

spoke to Cell C technical support (Ayanda - helpful). He said that "GPRS was not applied on our account". Apparently for some reason the settings on Cell C side are not being automatically applied when the account is activated and this is what is causing the problem. He said that he has now changed this and it should fix the problem.

My advice for Cell C is that if lots of folks like Joker (and us) have the same issue (i.e. a simple setting on Cell C side that is constantly disconnecting the dongle) this will be very bad for their rollout! Surely they should sweep through the database to pick up on accounts that have a similar issue. (Assuming of course that this does indeed fix the problem).
