Losing Your License Disc

Just hope you never get stopped by a keen eyed cop, yes they are still around, as he will arrest you on suspicion of fraud.

Didn't know it was an issue until now. They did pull me over at the border once, checked the VIN and phoned the traffic dept, then let me go without mentioning the disc. Another road block wanted to see my warning triangle (which I had luckily).

Anyway I'll put the original in.
 
Very helpful. I secure mine with cellotape juuuust in case, but my sisters licence disk blew out her car one day. She just waited until it was time to renew before we went and sorted it out.

You need to be in the Republic of Cape Town... :p
Pop into the city website, there is a link somewhere there and hey presto you get payment details a few days later, and a new disk perhaps a week after payment

I always used to scan mine and print a colour copy. Colour copiers are supposed to reject gilloche patterns but they scan them fine, although not in all detail. I doubt any cop - no matter how keen eyed - will ever be able to tell mine from the original unless they have advance gilloche detection hardware. A black and white, sure. Colour? Pffft! Things fade over the year.

That said, nowadays I use the original after scanning so if something does happen, I will reprint from the scan - purely because I do not have access to a colour copier the way I used to.

The paper has watermarks in it that no copier can reproduce and yes they can remove your license disk from the window to check it if they felt like it.

Agreed most of the time you'll get away with it here as most cops here are lazy fat pigs

Those watermarks - gilloche patterns I referred to - cannot easily be detected by the human eye for accuracy. A good example is a bank note. Looking at a one hundred for example. To the left of Madiba's head are several buffalo silhouettes. No human eye can tell that this pattern is made from a series of zeroes and ones. Now, magnify it 20 times. Amazing!

Even if the piggy did pull the disk out of its sticker (Damaging it, as designed) he would still most likely not have a 20x magnifier on him to inspect the integrity of those watermarks.

As far as I'm concerned, it could only have been stolen at the car wash or when the car went in for a service.

My car went into the panel beater with a new 13 inch spare wheel, it came back with a damaged 14 inch spare.

What if you made a colour copy? It's not like it is printed on some holy paper. Just a laser printer with a template..
 
I ride a bike. Our license disc holders get schnaaid like you would not believe.
After the fourth one got stolen I stripped my moer and moved over to colour copies.
I scan in the whole form and save it to Dropbox.
I print out 3 same-sized colour copies of the disc. All three get laminated.
One copy gets crazy taped to the rear of my license plate. Lots and lots of tape.
Second copy gets taped to the underside of my pillion seat.
Third copy goes in my bike jacket pocket.

Have not had a disc stolen in almost 2 years. Have never had an issue with a cop either.
If the ones on my bike get damaged I just replace them with new copies.
Sure, not technically legal, but the one time a cop gave me grief, I explained to him that our discs get swiped - he can ask any biker and most will have experienced it at least once. He said he thought it was a very smart plan, having duplicates.

See above - the template contains giloche marks. The disc itself only has a cross piece from the lined art that makes up the coat of arms. The whole page itself contains < 0.25pt text around the border reading Republic of South Africa in English and Afrikaans. But that part is not on the cut out disk. This is why I have always used a colour copy and never had an issue (as said, until recently because I no longer have access to a copier).

I lost mine once as well when the car went for a valet, fortunately I had a high-res scanned copy saved on my computer (I scan important documents for safekeeping & easy correspondence) and printed a new one on my colour printer at best quality. You could not really tell the difference, especially not behind a piece of glass. Cops did not pick it up either.

So I finally got around to do this and it took only R58.

I had my previous form where I did the cutout and just said "I please need a reprint", from there it was painless. I did however had to fillout two forms, one for application and one as declaration on what I lost. Easy Peasy.
 
Can I request a new license disk any traffic department and what are the costs involved

I was pulled over in a roadblock, got a R600 fine and my disk was taken away by Traffic Cop. I went to go pay the fine and found that I need to take car for full roadworthy test again before I can request my disk again. (front lights had a greenish glow bulbs was replaced)

My car is in for a service and will only get it back Thursday night. Friday is a public holiday and I need my car this weekend :(
