Low-cost Internet for the masses

you know technology producers should put limits on amount and types of profit that can be made with it to force the technologies to be used for the greater good rather than Telkom style profit. Of cause uptake might be slow but if its good and used abundantly then people will be forced to comply/support.

Cause i mean all the latest stuff is super efficient and cost cutting but Teleco's esp in africa where development is sometimes focused for gets 'abused' to make profit..
 
@BTech: if dial up is free, then most ppl wont pay R450 per month for adsl..
I would live with 56k if it was free, and wait the extra 5 secs for a web page to load. You cant download that much with ADSL anyway..3gig
 
exactly.. if they forced dial up to be free, it would kick every broadband provider to provide affordable service. then again since this is SA, isp's would suddenly charge R400 for a dial up account and no big savings would be made/charge per gig.
 
I don't think Telkom and free can be put together to form a functional sentence.
Then u ask Government can force Telkom to do that....Please.

I think tech should be more expensive and profits used to subsidise farming and low cost food for the hungry... but then that's just me...

Well is that not whats happening now(not to farming but we told to other funds and back pockets ;))? One thing i can't understand is why gov's around the world don't own the infrastructure and only allow teleco's from running over it, ie as a true service provider. I mean sure it will cost them, but they guarantee coverage where they want, and use of tech and also keeping the cost low. and its not like they can't afford to it either.
 
If dial-up via a Telkodemonopolies line were """free""" it still would not be free - there would be a R450/pm dial-up rental...:rolleyes:
 
Yeah - and can you imagine that I am using broadband at a cost of R800 per month to save myself the dial-up charges to use the net for 8 hours a day or more.
