Tried a new Biltong supplier on Amazon. Its sht.

Not sure if they used donkey meat or whatever.

Anyway...question is what to do with it short of dustbin.

Current leading idea is throw it in a pressure cooker for an hour & make beef stock. Is like 300g I'd say so not a huge amount.

Better ideas?

Resell it to someone unsuspecting as authentic premium imported SA 'jerky' :D

Well this UK seller definitely put a lot of emphasis on his SA-ness.

idk wtf they did but its not right...odd texture & look.

Can't actually get true ZA biltong in UK - importing meat products is a big no-no. So its UK beef that UK based Saffers turn into biltong. Last batch I got was decent but too dry (even for me) hence trying new supplier.

It could be down to the variety of spices used by the place you purchased the billies from. They do probably use similar ingredients but each region will have their own 'flavour' of whatever spice used in the production.

Can you identify a specific taste/smell perhaps? The texture again will probably be down to what the UK cattle ingest and various other factors that the biltong fundis can explain when they get here

Try this on a Friday? Who TF would import 300g of dried beef from Amazon?

Edit: Ok I see you in Europe? Rather import one of the little biltong makers that have been all the rage here in SA. They do work. My sis has one, and it does great.

A South African that is 10,000km away from the nearest true South African butcher. And no actually started with a kilo. Been nibbling on it but ja no...its not getting any better.

Nah my low grade comment & complaints relate more to whatever they did to the meat not the meat source itself. Its look like its covered in oil & has a reflective surface. Never seen anything like it.

Sounds like they didn't prep it correctly. Sorry man, I've had my fair share of bad billies here and it's not a nice feeling especially considering what it costs these days

If all else fails, grab yourself some Jack Link's Jerky in the mean time. It's not at all bad, and the Teriyaki one is probably the tastiest. The meat has a sweetish taste to it though which is something to get used to as a Safrican

eish...over my dead body. Not buying Jerky. That's not biltong.

Biltong on Amazon
ja bru. There are enough saffers overseas to make it a viable industry.

Anyway...sounds like beef stock it is.

I take it meat prices are hela expensive there?

Otherwise, buy some topside at your butchery and make yourself some Biltong, I made my first Biltong a little while ago and boy I'll never buy again.

Jerky might be better than the donkey you're currently nibbling on :D
haha fair point

Kinda. Biltong off amazon is like 500zar per kg. Locally rump...don't know the per kg but just paid round 180 zar for two pieces the size of a woman's hand. I'd guess 350 zar a kg perhaps. So yeah expensive but affordable in terms of local cost of living.

As for making it - considered it but don't have space. Will rather just pay the 500zar/kg.

Sheesh that's a lot of money.

What does the average diet that side normally look like?

About same as ZA side? Think Woolworths food basically. Main diffs:
- Salmon is comparatively more affordable, so I eat that 1 or 2 times a week
- You're pretty much forced to buy according to specials if you want reasonable pricing. e.g. I get pretty much all my protein from a M&S "3 for £10".
- The ready-meals are way better (some legit curries esp)
- Fruit prices are ridiculous. They'll take a melon or something...slice it up, package it and sell you a couple pieces for 50 zar. Except kiwis those are weirdly cheap.
- Pork is comparatively cheap. Beef comparatively expensive.
- Mushrooms cheaper & better than ZA
- Avos are stupidly expensive. Like 20 zar each...and then 50/50 chance the thing is rotten. Fk everything about that.
- Random stuff has prices that are completely fk'd. e.g. The other day I bought sweet potatoes...and realised later that the price per kg is about same as chicken. Really?

Oh wow.

Thanks for the detailed post btw.

Appreciated

Have you tried the avos from Aldi yet? Their expensive ones (95p) are top quality, even the cheaper 4 pack (1.65) are as good as the other supermarkets. Their meat is also better than most supermarkets at cheaper prices. Their ready made curry and Italian meals are even better than the M&S ones.

Oh, and if you're ever in the north east you should try the biltong from the butcher at Viking Centre, the guy imported his equipent and gets all his spices from SA, his boerewors is pretty good as well.

Not in London atm...which is kinda cramping my style. :(

Good to know that Aldi's is a better deal though.

You are going to laugh...

Take a walk through petfood stores. Can't remember the brand, but it is one of the well known prepacked brands here...
It is often sold as dog chews/jerky.
I kid you not, though my brother saw it about 2 years ago.
He bought a pack, and started eating it infront of the disgusted cashier.

Not sure if they still sell it.
