Hi guys looking for a low spec app or distro to use as my tv - planning to run xubuntu on my old 550mhz 256mb beast which is lying in the corner with nothing to do , dont need pvr or anything just want my old lifeview flyvideo piece of crap to watch tv - any ideas? mythbuntu, mythtv are pvr solutions and want 1ghz + - this wont do for me , any ideas?

Thanks
J

tvtime or xdtv seeing as you don't need pvr capability

A PIII/733MHz system can encode one video stream using the MPEG-4 codec using 480x480 capture resolution. This does not allow for live TV watching, but does allow for encoding video and then watching it later.

from mythtv.com - as i said my system i intend to use is 550 mhz this wont help me. I'd prefer to use a linux distro because win 98 is a whore.

Thanks

J

cant seem to find any spec requirements for the programs you listed milo - any ideas?

Thanks

xdtv
Code:
CPU
XdTV software doesn't need much CPU power. Nevertheless to flawlessy use video processing like video recording , video deinterlacing or any processing provided by external plugins, a strong processor is highly recommended.
XdTV works well with both AMD and Intel processors (with MMX instructions). It should also work with PowerPC and 68000 CPU family.
We suggest you to have, on your computer, at least an Intel Pentium II or an AMD K6-2 processor.
Some people told us that XdTV also works on small computer configuration as Intel Pentium 166 MMX (This must be seen as a mimimum).
XdTV works well with any i386 compatible MMX processor.

Given tvtime doesn't do any recording, I can't imagine its specs are very different

maybe have a look at a distro called freevo
http://freevo.sourceforge.net/

another good one to try is movix (and movix2)
http://movix.sourceforge.net/

both are small and tiny distributions geared towards booting directly into a media-type frontend...similar to myth, just with a lot less features.

<edited to add> geexbox is also in the same vein...
http://geexbox.org/en/index.html

i have tried all 3 and liked them all, although i had specific requirements noen of them could fulfill at the time (3 years ago)

I'm not out to start a OS war, but you could probably get better performance out of the system by using FreeBSD or NetBSD (NetBSD will run lighter than FreeBSD but is not for the OSS newbie). What chipset does your card have?

One central storage server for your entire home, features FTP, CIFS, RAID, etc. It's quite nice for computers that you don't really use any more :)

Does it also act as a firewall etc like smoothwall because my lil network is connected to the router via wifi - its not my dsl line/router its the people I stay with , so I cant really be making big changes or they get upset :(

CPU wise its k6-2 550 mhz - gpu im not sure I gave the box to my mom a few years back it got a virus while I was off at uni and she sent it to some dodgy pc place to get repaired and the guy stole my radeon 64mb gpu (quite nice at the time) and replaced it with a 8 mb sis card or some ****, boy was I pissed. - couldnt prove anything though.
