Hi there

I'm looking for a low powered download machine cause as you can see in my sig I have a power hungry system and want to have a system for browsing, email and downloads. I want to connect 4 externals to it. I was thinking of waiting for ivy bridge and then buy something.

What I have

Memory
screen
keyboard
mouse
corsair tx650w psu

I had the following in mind(I know it's not ivy bridge):

Cheap i3 or new celeron chips with a h67 or cheap z68
cheap case with lot's of hdd bays.

Some places have excellent pricing on Microservers,and they have 4 Internal HDD bays for SATA drives,and has 4 USB ports on the front,and 2 in the back

I wouldn't even go i3, just get a second gen Pentium with a R500 H61 Mobo. Along with a cheap coolermaster chassis your looking at about R1400.

I can buy from suppliers. Also money is not that big of an issue.

.

LOl i7 is a bit overrated for what I'm doing. Will still like to go cheap as possible but i will pay a bit more if power consumprion is low.

The Hp proliant microserver looks promising.

Raspberry pi.

Can I run power Raspberry Pi from batteries as well as from a wall socket?

Yes. The device should run well off 4 x AA cells.

i3 2120T, 35W TDP, is the best available performing lowest power SB desktop chip if you're going to go that route, [-]with next being the i5 2500T, 45W TDP[/-] - Scratch that, I see it isn't available, like the 2390T.

Just look for chip names with the T suffix if you want the lower-power chips.

Oh and all Celerons below 2Ghz are 35W TDP, along with Pentium chips with the T suffix.

Only problem with the rapberry pi is the 100mbps ethernet. So a microserver would serve this purpose better...

Ok I have just connected a amps meter to my pc and it's using about 0.2amps on idle and 1.3amps with bf3 vsync enabled everything on ultra. So my voltage on my ups is about 230 so thats about 36w-40w idle and 230-300w with bf3. not to bad actually. Maybe my pc is not using that much power after all.

Unless he has a 100Mb/s+ internet pipe I don't see the issue.

The "download machine" part. The problem is not getting the data from the internet - the problem is what you use it for afterwards. If you are going to watch HD content on the raspberry pi itself, it is probably fine, but if you want to use the data on another machine, you are stuck with 100mbps. So then you can solve that problem by getting a decent NAS, in which case the microserver is far cheaper... (I am having the same dilemma...)

He said he's using external drives for it.

So you suggest unplugging the drive whenever he wants to use the data he downloaded, and forcing the downloads to stop? Won't work for me...

I watch hd movies on my pc but that's just for during the day etc

HP Microserver n40l - http://www.cybernatic.co.za/product_info.php?products_id=907

Damn good price if you ask me. Actually considering buying one myself now.

I'm not unplugging the drives. i'm just going to switch that pc of when i'm not downloading during the night so that I can then use my gaming pc to play online.

I starting to think against this cause my pc is only using about 30-50w on idle and 299 on load so yes it's using less power than a light bulb. I checked with a amps meter yesterday and like I said about 0.2amps on idle and 1.3amps on load. so my voltage on the ups is 230v so

230x0.2 = 46w max idle
230x1.3 = 299w max playing battlefield 3

so my power usage is already low

also check the power usage on hp proliant microserver
