I'm going in for a Facet infiltration and epidural steriod injection to relieve me of my lower back pain.
Has any of you had this procedure, what can I expect?
I really hope it works, lower back pain sucks!

It does work, but of course does not last forever. Some steroids can be repeated several times, but some have side effects

I am most worried about the side effects. I recently became allergic to Omnopon which resulted in the worst itching fit ever, I nearly tore my skin off.

From my understanding 3 cortisone injections for the same joint is the limit. With exceptions. Then it's surgery time :p

Yes, a fusion is not the end of the world. You might not be able to play golf or cricket, but it is a permanent solution

Try to avoid surgery if you can for as long as you can. I know numerous people who have had back surgeries of various kinds and it has always been a disaster.

Take up yoga or pilates, it really does work in the longer term.

Make sure the hospital doses you up properly with a benzodiazepine, preferably diazepam since it has muscle relaxant properties before the surgery.

I'm only 26 so it sucks
Be tall they said, it will be fun they said!
I have not been active for quite a while so I think it is a contributing factor, although I stopped because of back and knee pain.

So I got the injection on friday. The pain seems to be gone, but my back feels very weak and I'm so uncomfortable. Atleast the pain is gone. I got few exercises to do to get my back muscle moving more.

Guess that must depend on the kind of surgery. I had surgery for a slipped disc in my lower back and everything went brilliantly - only spent 2.5 days in the hospital. It's now 3 years or so later and have not had a day of trouble.

The other option was to suffer through a year or 2 of intense pain and exercises and hopefully it would improve. Not whilst I'm still young, no thanks!

Jaco, what is the long term plan for this?

Remember it wasnt so long ago that I was still having issues with my knee and the doc just wanted to inject into my knee with cortisone. I let him do it once, before I went overseas and then decided I wasnt going to let him do it again. It's basically just a way of them saying "we cant actually do anything else so lets try some steroids and see if it does the trick"

I dont like that approach.

So what is your long term plan?

You might have to give up Diablo for some yoga classes :p

:D

I feel the same as this is just like a temporary solution! From my MRI scan it show that there is a 1 or 2 discs that are rapidly disintegrading. Dr says its bad genes and not much he can do. I must just look after my back and exercise more, Like Yoga and or pilates!
