So ermm, I've got this Celeron 1.1GHz, 128MB SDRAM 133, 20GB Maxtor IDE HDD, Pc here and was wondering if there are any crazy low resource hungry anti-virus programs out there that I could maybe put on it?

Disconnect from the internet and tape up all usb ports?

Sent from my GT-I9000

I've been using Norton Internet Security since the 2010 version and its excellent - Norton has always had a bad rep when it comes to resources, but since the 2010 version its been incredibly light and very effective.

I've tried Kaspersky and BitDefender and those where terribly heavy - I noticed the performance hit in games sometimes.

I've also used Microsoft Security Essentials on a few PC's and its really good, and light too - though I've not tested it on a celeron machine.

AVG and Avast felt a little heavy to me the last time I tried them - which was in 2010 - prior to discovering Norton IS.

+1 for NOD as well.

Seems I wasn't specific enough, the client uses a CellC wireless piece of crap so internet access is going to be restricted.

There is only 128MB of SDRAM 133, basically if I put MSE on there just won't be any ram left for anything, I am going to have a look at Immunet Protect Free 3.0.5.7515 first, the size of the installer is encouraging :D, NOD will be plan B though I'm pretty sure it's too resource hungry for this Pc. What anti-virus programs did people use 13 years ago?

I can't put Linux on a clients Pc, they barely grasp Windows :erm:

Update: sigh I see Immunet is also cloud based. :(

I don't see that working out well but OK. 128mb isn't good for anything with a GUI, let alone GUI and AV.

Maybe just buy 512mb off of junkmail throw that in & call it a day....I don't see you making any money off a client with that kind of gear anyway though so I'd aim for parting on peaceful terms.

What version of windows are they running?
A lot of AV programs won't run on anything earlier than Windows 2000

Can this kind of ram still be found? Doing it for love and charity.

Windows XP Home SP3

Going to give MSE a try cause for some reason when I just formated the Pc now the ram went up from 128MB to 256MB but the ram stick in it says 128MB

More RAM?

I have a couple of old 128meg SDRAM chips lying about...

So I put on MSE updated everything and restarted....the Pc is now unusable takes hours to do things that should take seconds, guess MSE will need to be uninstalled.. Will not put on a anti-virus on the Pc but will enable the Security Centre warnings so it will indicate to the owner that they should upgrade (telling that an anti-virus can not be put on due to insufficient ram)

You really should install Linux. Its simpler to use than Windows and uses less resources.
