On a serious note though i really hope we get lte coverage in our area, slightly outside pta, badly need an alternative to 3g.
 
This is great, I like the idea of being able to get a guaranteed wireless service, like their Wimax product, but improved wireless protocols basically. Nice to know that a flash mob of mobile users can't render your connection useless.

I'd take a train with a fixed track over any mobile runner, thank you. Yes I can't move it around easily but it sure as hell can transport more stuff and move with more consistency and speed for longer.

Sigh. If only Telkom would install ADSL in my area.

Why not ? If it is on licensed spectrum and the bandwidth per a user/tower is controlled why can't you guarantee bandwidth per user at access level, they know how many users are on a tower, they know the available bandwidth per tower, plan accordingly. It's a fixed location service, the same clients will be connected to the same tower, unlike mobile users who roam in and out of cells.

OK, but at least a much more consistent experience. For my normal mobile needs it would not be ideal, but for a fixed-mobile solution where you can't get ADSL (or the ADSL is terrible) or such and as a backup link to your fixed line service it is great.

Don't VC also offer some good fixed-mobile options for business using Wimax? Surely you will be migrating those to LTE as well and then just protecting some bandwidth for those customers from their towers?

I'd take new & improved Usain Bolt over old & decrepit Bruce Fordyce any day of the week.

For an office link? Remember this is an UNCAPPED service. To run video and voice over it you want some sort of minimum speed to ensure quality. I hope the jitter is minimal..

Contention is 25:1 so good luck at peak time.

Yup, you've got better (but not perfect) control over all the parameters.

Not anymore. WiMax is pretty much dead.

Point-to-Point microwave would be the best fixed-line replacement service, followed by point-to-multipoint, LTE, etc.

This is a fixed line service so we comparing it to ADSL, which has higher contention and is actually contended twice, on the Telkom network and at the ISP. My opinion is that, if this is implemented correctly it will blow ADSL away, having higher upload bandwidth and Neotel will be able to implement a proper QOS system as they control the whole network unlike ADSL which has zero QOS through the Telkom network. But the quality will depend on how greedy Neotel are.
 
Seriously...25:1 contention....have to agree with Gaz...not the most encouraging statement from Dr. Hay... Anycase, considering Neotel's limited CDMA coverage, which we would assume will be a mirror image for LTE (considering SDR and the like technologies from wireless vendors), not likely that I will see LTE from Neotel soon... TG for mobile 3G...might not be Bolt or Fordyce...but I am happy with my Zola Budd... :-)

I speak under correction, but that contention is not on the tower, rather for international traffic. Thus it is actually not bad compared to ADSL etc. You should also think of asking Telkom what your ADSL exchange congestion is like...

With Neotel you get uncapped, with all the others you pay per MB - a completely different service model. And no "uncapped" 3GB limit service like MTN...

The only issue is you have to deal with Neotel customer service who seem to be doing their best to make Telkom's call centre look good.
 
The upload speed is a step in the right direction. As we start doing more and more VOIP and video conferencing (as well as peer to peer content sharing) upload speed becomes important...
