LTE Phone?

You are very much jumping the gun. Our networks here, Vodacom and MTN....have only deployed LTE test networks with a limited number of towers. MTN and I think Vodacom (not 100% sure about Vodacom freq band now) is using some refarmed 1800 band spectrum to deploy the trial networks. Without knowing what bands our networks will be using to deploy LTE...it is risky business getting a LTE phone from overseas now as it might not be compatible with the bands that our networks do the deployment in. I know the networks are drooling over the 2.6ghz band....but with ICASA not looking very interested in allocating it....the networks might just decide to refarm spectrum elsewhere and deploy in that.

I say hang ten a bit and wait and see.

Fixed and agreed. It is a spectrum issue...

Easy way is to ask for more spectrum. Also spectrum is an investment. ICASA is right. These guys have other ways to improve their network efficiency. No network employed Rel.7 MIMO so far, which under optimum conditions increase throuput 100% using the same bandwith. There is FemtoCell to be deployed as well.
I agree 100% with ocleroux. Bands for LTE are not established, remember, the first attempt rolling-out 3G by CellC was in the band 1800MHz. You can be caught in the same situation.
