Lucid Air Grand Touring gets a Guinness World Record for range

The Lucid Air Grand Touring has just been awarded an official Guinness World Record for range, after having been driven from St. Moritz in Switzerland to Munich in Germany on one charge.

That's a distance of 1,205 km, during which the 112 kWh battery didn't need a recharge. Lucid has celebrated the record on its social media profiles as you can see below.

Lucid Air Grand Touring review

Verdict

Lucid is a startup that wants to compete with the very best from the get-go. The Air targets a historically demanding and proven segment of premium sedans with sporting prowess, where many others have failed. The Lucid Air is a fabulous electric alternative to the established ICE and hybrid rivals, which impresses in every category and has virtually no major weaknesses.

For the spirited drivers that love pushing their cars to the limit, the Lucid Air in its Grand Touring variant we tested is a wonderful proposition. It has more than enough power to propel it through traffic in no time, but also offers unrivaled stability in corners and high speeds. However, with the press of a button, it can transform into a calm cruiser to spend time in.

Lucid first debuted the Air five years ago and in some regards it's also starting to show signs of aging, but the overall impression is for a modern and focused vehicle that can comfortably compete with the very best in its class. The startup status and uncertainty for the future can definitely scare off some, but for those that are willing to gamble on it, they will receive an outstanding product that will put a smile on their faces every time they get behind the wheel.

Uber will buy 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs for its robotaxi fleet

Lucid announced today that its Gravity SUV will be joining Uber's fleet of autonomous robotaxis. Expect to see the first autonomous Gravity units "later next year in a major US city" (that weirdly isn't named).

Uber aims to eventually deploy 20,000 "or more" Lucid vehicles equipped with the Nuro Driver Level 4 autonomy system over six years in dozens of markets around the world. Lucid says the Gravity is a perfect fit for robotaxi operation thanks to its "advanced technology platform, redundant electrical and controls architectures, and long range".

Lucid and Uber promise a "fully integrated robotaxi experience developed for comfort, safety, and scale". The vehicles will be owned and operated by Uber or its third-party fleet partners and will be available exclusively in the Uber app.

The necessary hardware for autonomous operation will be installed onto the Gravity cars on Lucid's assembly line and will subsequently receive Nuro's software when the vehicle is commissioned by Uber.

Lucid Air gains access to Tesla Superchargers in the US this month, with a huge catch

Today, Lucid has announced that its Air models are finally getting access to more than 23,500 Tesla Superchargers in the US starting on July 31.

The Lucid Gravity has the NACS connector built-in, but the Air doesn't - so, to access Tesla Superchargers you'll need an adapter. As every other EV maker is doing, Lucid is providing just such an adapter for Air owners, at $220 excluding taxes.

But it comes with a huge downside: using the adapter, the car will only charge at up to 50kW. That's ludicrously slow considering the Air can charge at up to 250kW or 300kW at a CCS charging station (depending on exact model).

Lucid Air unlocks hands-free driving with new software update

Lucid Motors is proving that your vehicle can get smarter while it sits in your driveway, and rolls out a major software update that gives its Air sedan a significant new talent: hands-free driving. Starting this week, Lucid Air owners can activate the new features through an over-the-air (OTA) update.

The update introduces "Hands-Free Driving Assist" and "Hands-Free Lane Change Assist." These systems allow the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel on compatible divided highways. The car will manage its speed and steering to stay centered in its lane. To initiate a lane change, the driver simply needs to use the turn signal, and the vehicle will handle the rest, provided the coast is clear.

This might be a big step for the brand, but it feels a bit late to the party. Even worse, Lucid's upcoming Gravity SUV owners will have to wait until later this year to get the same functionality.

The new update is part of Lucid's optional "DreamDrive Pro" package. For an extra $950 plus tax, customers get an advanced suite of tools designed to make driving easier and safer. Before this latest update, the package already included features like adaptive cruise control, which maintains a set distance from the car ahead, and a 3D lane visualization on the driver's display.

Lucid teases rugged EV - is it an off-road Gravity?

Lucid Motors is causing quite a stir with a mysterious new teaser. The automaker hinted at a “bold new concept of electric exploration” on its social media, promising a full reveal on Thursday, August 14, during the Monterey Car Week. It seems Lucid is looking to expand its image beyond sleek sedans and family-friendly SUVs and into the more adventurous side of the EV market.

The teaser itself is short on words but offers a few compelling visual clues. We can clearly spot features not typically found on Lucid’s current vehicles - a roof-mounted light bar and a set of aggressive, blacked-out wheels. These elements are staples of off-road and overland vehicles, and strongly suggest that whatever Lucid is about to unveil, it’s designed to handle more than just pristine asphalt.

The most logical bet is that the company is preparing to launch an off-road-focused variant of its new Lucid Gravity SUV. After launching the standard Gravity in late 2024, adding a more rugged version would be a smart next step to broaden its appeal, following a popular trend in the electric vehicle space.

Lucid officially presents the Gravity X concept, a "trail-ready SUV"

After teasing it a few days ago, Lucid has now unveiled its Gravity X concept, which it bills as "a trail-ready SUV designed to push boundaries and redefine adventure".

It will make its first public appearance on the Concept Lawn of the 74th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday, August 17.

The Gravity X uses a Gravity Grand Touring as its foundation, and combines advanced on- and off-road readiness. It "embodies refined ruggedness and quiet capability", Lucid says.

It comes with redesigned front and rear fascias, improved approach and departure angles, a widened track, a lifted ride height, protective skid plates, integrated tow hooks, and custom wheels with all-terrain tires, all in a "sleek silhouette" that "retains Lucid's exceptional aerodynamics".

Lucid Air sets new 829 km record in Autobild's 27 electric car range test

Electric cars are no different from their gas-powered cousins when it comes to this one thing: official range figures. Those "official" numbers are one thing, but real-world performance is what truly matters to drivers. A comprehensive test conducted by the Norwegian Automobile Association (NAF) put 27 new electric vehicles to the test, and the results were quite interesting.

The Lucid Air, a luxury sedan from the United States, has set a stunning new distance record, traveling an impressive 829 km on a single charge, shattering the previous record held by the Tesla Model S at 672 km.

Twice a year, the NAF runs its "El Prix" test, a demanding real-world trial designed to see how far the latest EVs can actually go. The test isn't a gentle drive on a closed track. Cars start with a full battery in Oslo and drive in normal traffic on a route that includes city streets, country roads, and highways. The path heads north, forcing the vehicles to climb in elevation.

During this latest run, drivers faced temperatures between 7°C and 17°C and bouts of heavy rain, conditions that typically reduce an EV's efficiency. This rigorous setup gives a much clearer picture of what a driver can expect from their electric car than a simple lab test.
