Hi guys,

I'm trying to reload Windows XP on my friend's PC, but I just CANNOT get it to boot from the CD. I've changed every possible setting in the BIOS, but no luck. This includes putting only the DVD-RW in the boot sequence and even disabling the SATA support. I've even disconnected every other IDE device in the PC and only connected my DVD-RW (which definitely works), but no luck whatsoever.

I'm fresh out of ideas. In 15 years of using PCs, I've NEVER seen anything like this. And yes, the Windows CD is fine, I've tested it in my PC, in my DVD Writer, which is currently in his PC. And yes, I've even tried connecting the DVD Writer as Primary Master... :confused:
 
good thing i the only ide i have is the dvd-rw, i remember having loads of such problems with ide hds

What happens if you take his DVD writer, and put it into your PC, will it still boot?

Is there something like a boot order in the BIOS setup?

Try swapping it out for a standard IDE CDROM and see what happens.

Computers... *sigh* there's always something new...
 
Have you tried another drive in his PC?
Have you tried resetting the BIOS to defaults? (Preferrably by using the jumper)
 
Are using the same IDE cabel in both pc's
Try nother cable
 
Check for and apply any newer BIOS version - just make sure you don't do it during load shedding and ensure that there is a UPS attached, then try again.

More then once I've came across CD-ROM drives that just refuse to boot, change the drive with another and it works.

This is the worst because it is always the last thing you think off and although the cable would look fine, it might be faulty.
 
Might be a silly question but you say you played around with BIOS but did you try pressing F12 or get to the boot menu and select the drive from there?
