South African Rugby Union (Saru) Deputy President Mike Stofile says Luke Watson has suffered because of his father Cheeky's stance against apartheid, but that this would not be tolerated in the future.

Stofile told the Cape Times on Monday that Watson had been "treated unfairly" for too long, and that his unusual elevation to the Bok squad was justified.

Good move Stofile.

Anyone hear Mike Stofile on 702 yesterday? The guy makes a spastic frog look intelligent. He got so owned by John Robby.

Watson on his own is good enough to be a springbuck.
Unfortunately there are only place for 22 players these days. He only had to wait.
For ever and a day he will be known as a quota player.

Hoskins just proves what double talking lying waste of a skin he is.
"The government will never interfere at springbuck level. There is no quotas at springbuck level."

Let us see what semantics he is going to use now to pretend he didn't interfere.

At the moment his attitude is I am in control so shut up.

Typical of the power usurping ANC.

Stofile is an idiot
"We also questioned the belief that John Smit is the best hooker in the country. We told them that Schalk Brits is a mobile hooker, but they said Smit is better in the scrums. But don't we want a guy who can run with the ball and tackle well like Brits, than someone who can only scrum, like Smit? It is all about providing equal opportunities. That is being fair to all."

Rugby isn't about being fair, it is about winning... the coach has a certain game plan and he picks players accordingly. That is what he is paid to do.

After these comments, Jake White should resign and Stofile and Hoskins should coach the Springboks for the world cup so we can see how far they get with their 'popular selection' equal opportunity side...

And here we sit with that absurd situation.

Our exalted leader of SARU is worse off than Jannie who played under 12b at Pofadder. At least Jannie played rugby.

Please notice that doesn't stop this giant in rugby to turn national selector. Rambling about tactics and strategies he reads in the Sunday papers.

This has nothing to do with rugby. It is pure politics.

Wasn't that Regan Hoskins?

Doesn't this kind of make things worse for Luke, now the only reason he is selected in because of what his old man did.....

"While South Africans are still celebrating the successful Super 14 rugby tournament and preparing to bring the Super 14 cup to South Africa, the ANC replies to it with the second reading debate of the controversial Sport and Recreation Amendment Bill, which will be hurried through parliament...," Freedom Front Plus spokesperson Willie Spies said on Monday.

The bill is to be debated in the National Assembly on Wednesday, and provides, among other things, for the Minister of Sport and Recreation to intervene in certain sport disputes and to issue guidelines to promote equity, representivity, and redress in sport and recreation.

"What the ANC... is doing now is to replace its indirect interference with direct, active, government-sanctioned intervention - something which is in direct opposition to various international sporting conventions."

I am actually surprised that the government hasn't gone to the UN with a proposal that would have all of the rugby playing nations being given a quota on the number of times that they are allowed to win.

Heaven knows we need this if we are to win at soccer or cricket.

Luke is just as hardass.

He is but a kid still he says:

Everybody know my stance on the struggle.

He has a stance about something he knows nothing.

That is part of his problem. He is a junior who gets under the seniors' skin.
You don't get selected just for ability. You must fit in the team on a number of criteria. If you are good and don't get selected it is time to take stock.

Arrogance from a newbie is nowhere appreciated.

Add rugby to that.

I much rather win the world cup and everybody dance in the streets. For one evening we can forget about our stupid unqualified government. I did not hear a single person discussing politics last Saturday afternoon.

But now to make that magic figure of 5 or 6 or x% players of color to please the government we make one player of color happy and thousands sulk because we lost the semi-final.

Great place this being led by stooges.

Getafix, I fully appreciate the points you make, but what has happened seems to be out of Luke's hands....his ability and attitude have been tested on the field.

Maybe I'm missing your point though?

Its rugby! They dont even have clans! they have this thing called "a team". And they play on this thing called "a field".

Methinks your are playing far to much BF2 :D

Is Hoskins an ANC member, or is it just a convenient scapegoat?

I think this is more typical of the type of rugby admin we've had in the country for years and years. This kind of move could just have easily have come from van Rooyen or Luyt or Craven - none of whom were afraid to stick their oars in when they felt like it.

More of the same.

All politics, one of these days the GOV will integrate the soccer and rugby teams in a new national only sport. Representing the country (only) in South Africa. Not unlike what they have done with the hospitals, education and and police force. :D

Luke Watson is black - Rasool
Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool says he regards Western Province skipper Luke Watson as a "black player" and he should therefore be included in the Springbok team ahead of "white" players of equal talent.

On Monday Rasool entered the fray, arguing that Watson should not be seen as a white player and should thus be selected for the team ahead of other white loose forwards of equal talent.

"Given where he comes from, and where his father deliberately chose to play his rugby, on the dusty, pot-holed fields of the Eastern Cape's townships, Luke comes from a historically disadvantaged community," Rasool said.

"Jake White shouldn't be looking at Watson as a white player.

"If there are white flanks of equal ability, then Luke should get the nod because of his family's history."

Rasool said that including Watson would be a symbolic moment. He recalled from his boyhood days a visit to Athlone Stadium by Kwazakele, the team of Luke's father, Cheeky Watson.

Holy ****

That is absolutly crazy. I mean BoB and Zuma crazy

Good move Stofile.

He also said

"We cannot have a situation where those people's children get victimised because of their parent's action."

It's a two way street seems to me.

A little less selective quoting please Tibby.

Nah! He's only a good Currie Cup player. He won't make the step up.

Ain't that the truth!

Although I must say I expected better from Hoskins. Very disappointing.
